DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Patina Maldives

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Hotel

INSPIRATION:
In the Maldives sand, skies and ocean, all architecture can do is humbly filter the lights, frame the views, creating different narratives as one strolls around the magnificent surroundings. Patina Maldives project was able to produce architecture that is much less important than nature. Contemporary, classic and elegant.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The hotel in the Maldives provides a welcoming space for people to live light and amplify natural feelings in a dreamy state. The volumetric answers are extremely delicate, respectful to its surroundings, trying to provide shadows and coziness, to capture and amplify the landscape strength. The architectural lines never break the horizon, they speak low and elegantly. All buildings are visually permeable, dematerialized, putting life and men in the center of the experience.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The hotel is a kaleidoscope of atmospheres organized in an ascending way: from private to public, from isolation to belonging, from simplicity to sophistication. We escalate the textures and emotions from 0 to 100, from soft shadows to overwhelming light. It’s a rhythm with contrast, pauses and transparencies. From slow dolce far niente to exuberant real vitality, it is a place for people to bond with nature and each other, for people to experience the essential with glamour.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in 2016 and lasted for two years. The architecture team was based in São Paulo, Brazil, and had the collaboration of a local architect in the Maldives. Construction started after a year into the project, and was finished in 2021

Everything on the island – from the masterplan to the light pendants – was designed by studio mk27 with various collaborators worldwide. Through a healthy collaborative process, the team managed to create an unique living experience.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
built area: 34.500 m²

TAGS:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The vernacular design In Maldives is basically fisherman villages spread among the islands, that sometimes one can´t even notice from the sea. Corral stone walls, wooden roof structures were some of the natural materials available to build and set an architecture fully Integrated to the nature. That was our biggest Inspiration, to respect nature and allow the guest to enjoy such a special place.

CHALLENGE:
Patina Maldives design was built on growing attention to the connection with the place and culture, the importance of uniqueness and authenticity. The special role of wellness, places to exercise and meditate, a generous bathing room with a view. And most recently, of course, the need for open air spaces, a deep integration of inside-out, spaces that are welcoming and poetic, rather than sculptures. We also saw it as an ultimate stage for voyeurism, for observation of ourselves from a distance, and therefore to reconnect with ourselves and the others. We searched for diversity, for empathy with the other and our environment, the need for quiet solutions to our problems.
