DESIGN NAME: Night of City
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Nightclub
INSPIRATION: Inspired by concepts of astral traveling and alternate realities, Night of City (NOC), is a manifestation of an immersive, multi-purpose nightlife entertainment concept that explores integrations and boundaries between physical and virtual dimensions through numerous technologies. Utilizing organic forms and kinetic mechanical structures, the spatial experience becomes a process of metamorphosis, while customized lighting and visual animations are choreographed to enhance all senses.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Located in the city center of Hanghou, also known as the tech hub of China, Night of City (NOC) combines various design and construction technologies, artisitic expressions, and multi-disciplinary collaborations to create transcendental experiences within the 6,300-square-meter venue. The 46 generous, avant-garde, private rooms combine live DJ, karaoke, gaming, dining and performances all within the privacy and safety of individual rooms; a crucial design consideration for the post-pandemic era.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The client operation team was involved with the design back in 2020 during the preliminary concept phase. Due to the size and complexity of the project, back of house areas and specific equipment installation requirements are also carefully considered during the initial planning. Numerous mock-ups and samples were constructed and approved before final installations. At the same time, on-site and online video meetings were conducted on a weekly basis to ensure progress and quality control.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design of NOC began in October 2020 in Shanghai. The construction in Hangzhou began in April 2021, and was completed and opened to public in June 2022.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: As none of the rooms were exactly the same, a lot of research went into the investigation and coordination of material feasibility and constructability for curvilinear geometries. Specific details where various lighting features and other electrical systems are embedded, were also 3D modeled and printed throughout all stages of design studies and implementation. As a result, the client team, various consultants and construction team collaborated seamlessly and completed the ambitious project.
CHALLENGE: Due to the curvilinear design aesthetics, the project took on various challenges during the design and construction phases. While design studies and final drawings are prepared with precise 3D modeling and simulation, coordinations with consultants such as mechanical, lighting and AV were conducted on-site and online due to pandemic travel restrictions and lockdowns. Numerous testings of components and prototypes of kinetic-electrical systems were also performed to ensure manufacturing precision and safety.
