PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Multiwear Jewelry
INSPIRATION:
Flowers are often seen as symbols of joy and pleasure, and are a recurring theme in art and poetry. As a visual artist and jewelry designer, I would like to create and present an ideally perfect flower which integrate culturally significant flowers, which are lotus, peony, chrysanthemum, calla lily and magnolia, into one whole piece. Flowering period of the five different flowers alternates throughout the year, implying happiness all year round. Also, it means everlasting blooming.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The combination of jade and gold in ornaments dates as far back as 2,500 years in ancient China. Nephrite jade is hallowed with lofty moral connotations in Chinese culture and prized for its profound beauty for thousands of years.This is a contemporary piece of jewelry developed from traditional jade carving and metalworking that is transformable for multi-wear needs. Certified natural nephrite jade with good whiteness and luster, hand-carved and set in 18K gold with diamonds inlaid.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The flower bangle disassemble to 5 different petal pendants, a cocktail ring and a simple bangle. Also it could become a sculpture for display when not worn.
Meticulous design and workmanship make the bangle to assemble and disassemble easily.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in June 2020 and finished in September 2020 in Tianjin, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
With traditional jade carving techniques, nephrite jade is hand carved into petals with smoothly curve lines and beautiful polish which fit closely to the curved mount of 18K gold.
A unique designed hidden gold hub piece to hold the petal pendants, ring and bangle together and twist to lock so that this versatile piece is realized.
The creation of exquisite, original pieces from the finest materials, made to the highest standard of craftsmanship.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Overall dimensions of the bangle are 9.2cm x 9.2cm x 7.7cm. The total weight of the bangle is 180 grams.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
I am fascinated by the profound beauty and unique delicate texture of nephrite jade which represents the deepest spiritual pursuit and I have always been interested in finding out new approaches in combining nephrite jade with gold, diamonds, pearls and other precious stones in jewelry design.
CHALLENGE:
5 different petals derived from 5 different flowers with its characteristics, it’s challenging to combine them to form a brand new flower which doesn’t exist in reality.
Many more factors need to consider during the process of creating multiwear jewelry, including the mechanisms must be simple and hidden.
High quality nephrite jade is natural and rare, to ensure the consistency of the whiteness and luster of all petals is challenging. It needs rich experiences in material selection, design and jade carving techniques.
