| DESIGN NAME: The Fortunate Ruyi Chair PRIMARY FUNCTION: Furniture INSPIRATION: Ruyi has served as a unique cultural symbol in Chinese culture and has an underlying meaning of great fortune. The designer has set Ruyi as the primary inspiration for the chair design because, during the designer experiences in the field of interior design over the years, each design project must be executed based on the client preferences and many other contributing factors. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Therefore, this design is nothing like what the designer has done before, it starts with the pattern of the Ruyi pattern, and the designer has spent much time researching the concepts and styles of multiple chairs. Little by little, The Fortunate Ruyi Chair concept has transformed into a clearer picture. It is an art piece combined with various layers of materials, the beauty of craftsmanship, the richness of cultural heritage, and the amazingness of the designer ingenuity. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Other than that, the lines of the seat are extended by the Ruyi pattern by the use of the irregular curved lines, unique angles of the inner curves, and the outer corners of the tips to produce a rich and dynamic rhythm of the chair, delivering a sense of flow and producing an asymmetrical balance. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: For this project, the designer has set the classic chair style shape as the structural basis and combined it with the simplified Ruyi pattern. Then, by duplicating and flipping the pattern, the pattern is overlapped and fused to form a curved seat and legs, perfectly blending traditional culture with modern aesthetics. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The furniture piece is Width 500 mmm x Depth 600mm x Height 500mm. TAGS: Furniture, Design, Chair, Ruyi, Fortunate RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Vladimir Kagan, the noted German American furniture designer, believes that designing a chair is like creating a container for an individual. Therefore, the function, shape, and meaning of the chair are highly associated with the user and the environment. This project is a clever application of one of the historical motifs of Chinese culture, Ruyi, to a modern product design. From 3D natural objects to 2D patterns and then applying them to 3D products, the designer has simplified the lines and colors to create a work that is aesthetically modern and attractive. CHALLENGE: For this project, the designer has analyzed the Ruyi pattern, extracted its connotation, and applied it to the product form so that the product is aesthetically, culturally, and functionally enjoyable. In this way, users will understand the underlying cultural spirit of the chair through their experiences with the product. Moreover, this product interprets the spirit of traditional culture unconventionally, changing our perception of traditional culture yet retaining its cultural connotation and, most importantly, paying tribute to ancestry wisdom.
