DESIGN NAME: Underlying Elegance
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential House
INSPIRATION: A remodeled old apartment in Taipei, Underlying Elegance has a north-facing layout with a loft and excellent natural light. Its design, from materials selection, style formation and functionality, adheres to the designer’s belief in interior design and is a milestone to his next stage in life. With the renovation completed, it becomes the designer’s home but serves as a model residence for clients to inspect in person.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The entire residence features a mixed modern style. To meet the needs of children with a lot of activity, the lower level is laid out as a complete common area, including an open-concept living room, dining room and a Japanese room. Sections of different functions get connected with each other, and natural light can go deep indoors unobstructed. The privacy of the bedrooms is configured on the upper level.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Faux stone veins are applied to the walls in the common area, with the marble-vein TV wall starting from the entryway to the Japanese room in the back, which, combined with TV cabinetry and elevated flooring in the Japanese room, makes for indoor coherence and entirety.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2021 and finished in September 2021 in Taipei City, Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: At the entrance, a stairway landing facing the foyer comes into view, forming an indented wall cranny with the structural pillar and the shaft. However, an entire sheet of vegetation wall creating greenness and a vertical garden serves to transform ingeniously an incongruous space into an accent piece. The wooden tiles paved at a 45-degree angle soften the stairway turn and visually reduce narrowness of the space, adding liveliness to the place.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: What is extraordinary is that the dining room is placed right next to the window and is separate from the kitchen. In this way, the family can enjoy the most pleasant natural light when dining, and this also serves to connect the indoor and the outdoor, taking it as a priority to configure different sections based on their respective functions.
CHALLENGE: With an adherence to environmental sustainability, green materials are applied, and a large number of existing items are retained to be reused ingeniously. Thus this user-friendly space and its functionality are thoughtfully mapped out. A meticulously-made residence that encompasses both practicality and humanistic spirit endows this home with aesthetic appeal, turning it into a thoughtful, human-based vessel of life full of story and character.
