DESIGN NAME: Yuimu
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Japanese Restaurant
INSPIRATION: The restaurant is named "Ben" in Chinese, which without the middle of the horizontal line becomes the word "wooden." This concept is extended to the interior design, where the entire restaurant is designed and decorated without any wood or boards. It is a "no wood" space. Lighting inspired by the four seasons - spring, summer, autumn, and winter - creates a range of experiences from soft to strong. The overall interior design is based on a contemporary Japanese aesthetic.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Yuimu is a Japanese-style hybrid restaurant featuring Omakase. The double-storey loft structure is divided into a yakitori section, a sake bar, a private dining area, and an Omakase session. The restaurant is located in a green building in Malaysia, so the entire interior design and decoration must comply with international green standards. All materials used for decoration are zero-formaldehyde, environmentally friendly, and recycled.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design phase of the project took three months instead of one. The most challenging aspect was selecting materials that met three criteria: 1) non-wooden, 2) zero formaldehyde, and 3) environmentally friendly. The available materials were limited, and many new decoration materials used in the installation further complicated the task. A significant portion of the decoration was made of cement, which presented a challenge and had to be completed within the three-month deadline. The entire project was completed in just 90 days, around the clock.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2022 in Kuala Lumpur and was completed in December 2022, also in Kuala Lumpur.

The whole restaurant is designed and decorated without any wood or boards - it is actually a "no wood" space.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Inspired by the rich meanings and aesthetics of Chinese characters, the designer has created four distinct atmospheres that embody the seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Each scene reflects a unique blend of traditional and modern elements, as well as a deep appreciation for the natural world.
To achieve this captivating design, the designer has carefully curated a range of innovative materials that fuse old and new. From the sleek and shiny metal accents to the warm and earthy textures of wood and stone, every element has been meticulously chosen to enhance the ambiance and functionality of the space.
CHALLENGE: The entire restaurant was designed and decorated without using any wood or board, which meant that the interior designer had to source alternative materials. This "no wood" approach required a creative and innovative use of materials to achieve the desired design aesthetic.
