DESIGN NAME: 2D Lantern
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Urban Fixture
INSPIRATION: She's always thought that subtracting vision is a good way to render something visible. In a world full of objects, she wants to allow herself the luxury of thinking of what is essential. She shared the idea of an unusual lantern, a very small but high-tech luminaire. Her urban lantern project was born from a work based on research leading her to create a thin shape expressing extraordinary lightness. Renewal means combining what exists into new forms, creating something that was not there before.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: 2D urban lantern has only two dimensions, it has no depth, it only develops on a flat surface, as if it were a drawing written in the sky. Its shape is both visible and invisible depending on how the designer includes it in the space. An element that manifests its presence only at the moment it is illuminated, discretely integrating itself into the urban context.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: 2D is a lantern that illuminates urban public spaces, .
The urban lantern with its transparency and slender and elongated shape fits into the context of historic cities without characterizing them too much. If you put it face to face on a building you see its outline but if you put it sideways you only see a vertical line; this feature makes it almost invisible. The light of the 2D is very important, different optics and powers allow to illuminate different areas. Visual comfort was a priority in the development of the project
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2013 and finished in May 2020. It's the last simplification of a series of lanterns she has designed for some public works. The urban lantern have always fascinated her, they tell the identity of places; the lanterns characterize the places. In 2018 she included it in the lighting project for a small town Gozzano (NO) Italy, in April 2020 she made the patent and
in May 2020.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Lantern is in cold galvanized steel, 2mm. which, powder coated to protect it from corrosion. The optical part in aluminum guarantees correct heat dissipation to the LED cobs. The silicone lens allows you to equip the lantern with different optics. A final prismatic glass elevates visual confort by reducing glare.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Bianca Tresoldi is a lighting designer who designs light for urban spaces. There are contemporary and stylish lanterns on the market the latest ones are historical fakes. In 2018 the Municipality of Gozzano commissioned her to lit up the historic center. The government department of historic buildings didn't want the modern lamps so she proposed the 2D lantern, designed in 2013. Its design resembles the ancient lantern while declaring its contemporary. The historic department approved it; declaring that: "the 2D has given identity to Gozzano place"
CHALLENGE: The creative challenge was to be able to insert in such a small size, only 160mm in diameter, a high-tech optical unit capable of illuminating very large areas over heights of up to 8m
