DESIGN NAME: Longking Pro Environmental Campus
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Industrial Public Landscape
INSPIRATION: Thankfully the world is beginning to realize the climate predicament cannot be solved by a return to nostalgic ideas of Nature which are embedded in the style of ecological landscapes. We live in a time where environmental technology bridges the gap between outdated fossil fuel civilizations and more sustainable futures. Visually, the design explores this concept through the eternally fascinating dichotomy between order and chaos, organic vs regular, manufactured vs wild.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The site is located on former agriculture land in a pristine valley in the mountains North of Longyan city. For the landscape design BAM showcases the environmental technologies pioneered by the client, Longking company. Apart from showcasing plant-based and technological methods for water and soil filtration, the spaces of the campus also provide staff the opportunity for new forms of recreational engagement with the ecological processes and technologies which are the fruits of their labor.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design scheme is shaped heavily by the water and sewage condition on site.
An underground spring forms a water source at the top of the site, the rain run off is collected from the roofs of the factories to further charge the water system. This water mixes with the post-filtered sewage through a biofiltration wetland to reach landscape water levels. This is then pumped back up through the filtration further increasing the purity of the water.
The factory and office tower sewage is piped to an MBR device, which is a box developed by the client for treating sewage on off grid sites. It is the size of a shipping container in the landscape. It prefilters the toxic elements down to a point where it can then be biofiltered safely.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Location: Longyan, Fujian, China.
Design Period: 2020-2021
Construction Period: 2021-2022

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The factories are organized around a central quad, structured by a 6m grid of Camphor trees. The landscape water system forms the central channel of this quad, a morphology related to the functional attributes of the ‘natural’ water systems. To make this factory function, this landscape provides sewage filtration, heavy metal uptake, and runoff recapture. But also, to make this factory function, this landscape provides the cool campus, the recreational spaces, the social spaces that the humans need to thrive. The sewage treatment element takes care of the office workers waste. The basketball court creates a factory worker break space. Ecological and cultural spaces are equal pieces of the landscape.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Design Area: 54,000m2
TAGS: landscape design, campus, environmental design, factory, industrial, laboratory, project interview, research facility, water facility
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Significant research, supported by environmental consultant Ren Xiangyu, was dedicated to figure out a feasible wetland filtration system for the cleaning of sewage water on site. The total filtration system on campus is a complex combination of natural wetlands, various treatment units, filters, tanks and drains, as well as selected plant species.
CHALLENGE: Cleaning sewage, which happens on site in this project, was the biggest challenge because of the complexity of the overall water system, which has been described in the flow section of this application. The client really followed through with the implementation of the technologies which is key to the success of this project long-term. For humans to improve our relationship to the earth we need environmental technologies like those developed in Longking. We also need to understand the landscape needs to be both good for us and the planet. Longking campus needs to be a landscape for its people, so they work better and harder making more technology to clean up our other industries.

NAME: Ballistic Architecture Machine (BAM)
PROFILE: Ballistic Architecture Machine (BAM) is a multidisciplinary design office based in Beijing, Shanghai and New York. It is our unwavering stance that the landscape is the most important design realm of the 21st century. While always focused on the landscape spaces of the urban realm BAM’s strategy of ‘just say yes’ has led to an extremely diverse body of work, which fits uncomfortably into traditional definitions of Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Architecture or Installation. The perpetual debate within the professions in and around the medium of landscape regarding the relationship of landscape to aesthetics, culture, and the environment further illuminates BAM’s enigmatic slogan “Nature is an Idea.”
