DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Re48 Storehouse

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Industrial Factory Reuse

INSPIRATION:
This storehouse lends us significant freedom to reimagine new commercial spaces for various functions. The compounded space contains a cafe, a gallery, a tile showroom, and a design studio. Open space design allows the exchange of ideas flows more freely.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
We are interested in preserving the original design of the space, rather than trying to erase the old one. As part of a new commercial space, the process entailed preserving the shells of the existing factory buildings while adding new interior structures. Keeping the ex-metal factory with its unique features such as ultra-high ceilings, exposed rough metal structures, and industrial machinery.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The compounded space contains a cafe, a gallery, a tile showroom, and a design studio. Open space design allows the exchange of ideas flows more freely. Separated by different entrances, on the right side of the cafe is the tile showroom, or rather, an art gallery. The tiles can be turned by their audiences and can be seen by the cafe visitors as well, creating an interesting dynamic between the two spaces without disturbing each other. If you would like to see those big industrial machines up close, you may go up to the gallery on the second floor, all while seeing the artwork or listening to live music. Feel the history of the old metal factory, imagine its past glory.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2022 in Taichung, Taiwan, and finished in April 2022.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
We are drawn to the interior spans of factory and are creatively adapting them for postindustrial reuse. keeping the ex-metal factory with its unique features such as ultra-high ceiling, exposed rough metal structures, and industrial machinery. The interior design uses a timber framework a diminutive imitation of the larger steel roofing frame together with special lighting techniques to create a multilayer visual effect. The internal timber frame is slightly different in angle compared to its steel roofing counterpart, creating a displacement effect and adding another layer of design interest. The 14-meter-long coffee bar is reminiscent of the factory assembly line, divided into three sections a pastry counter, a hand-drip coffee bar, and an espresso bar. The open space design lets the visitors observe the ‘assembly line’ from their seats.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
443 m2

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We are focusing on the ergonomics of this work. The configuration of movement lines on a flat surface. The practical application heights, such as stairs treads should comply with 28 Multiply and 19. The height of a desk at 76 centimeters is the most comfortable for ergonomics. Make the movement lines interesting, ergonomic, visually clean and concise in design, embody the spirit of craftsmanship, and achieve a minimalist attitude.

CHALLENGE:
The first difficulty we faced in this project was: how to display the old and new side by side without contradicting each other. Namely, how to preserve the characteristics, the rawness of the metal factory, rather than painting everything white and fitting it with all the shining new gauges? How to combine different design languages? how to stage the lighting to facilitate this conversation between the past and present? Based on these ideas, we aim to give this space a new function: a place that inspires creativity and a place to have a cup of coffee. From now on, the word metal factory carries a special meaning for the locals a place where neighbors became friends.

NAME:
Re Factory

PROFILE:
As society progresses, we face new challenges and opportunities that require innovative solutions. One area that demands attention is environmental sustainability, which is why we embrace the Re philosophy. Re stands for regeneration, and it entails creating a new spatial definition by fusing the building's structural texture with personal life experiences. This approach generates a unique living space that emphasizes sustainability and environmental responsibility. Our client, who is passionate about coffee research, has partnered with us to find a reusable old architectural space that aligns with this vision. Their goal is to incorporate the aesthetics of dining spaces into other fields for potential partnerships, offering customers a range of visual experiences. By embracing the Re philosophy, we can reimagine spaces that promote sustainability, while still providing an enjoyable and memorable experience for our customers. Together, we can create a brighter future that values both innovation and sustainability.
