DESIGN NAME: Corridor
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Restaurant
INSPIRATION: The project is a commercial space selling light meals and freshly brewed beer. The owner has expanded the business to attract out-of-towners who visit Luodong on weekends and holidays and also hopes to provide visitors with an alternative to the Luodong night market for travel. There are two differ-ent styles, one is a bar for drinks and con-versation in the evening with pizza and fried chicken, and the other is a friendly restaurant for friends and family gatherings, pets, and children.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: 'Corridor' is a restaurant and bar that consists of two different spaces. The front space is a small bar, while the back space is a sunny place for eating, chatting, and gathering. The designers cleverly use spatial characteristics and design elements to combine the two distinct spaces. The designers turn the disadvantage into an advantage by transforming the original dark space into a wall for displaying artwork, using cavity boards and spotlights to create an environment for displaying artwork. The whole restaurant is like a small gallery space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The designers inject the concept of a sloping roof like a loft into the glass house con-verted from a deserted backyard and create a space close to nature, greenery, and sunlight. The flooring is made of groundwork and wooden flooring, while the roof is made of white insulation tin roof, and the overall tone is based on earth colors. The designers fulfill the owner's requirement to create a space from nothing and greatly enhance the use of space.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project finished in June 2019 in Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To provide a warm space for family and friends to gather, the designers create a trans-parent glasshouse in the back with a transparent fiberglass panel and a heat-insulating tin roof. The highly translucent fiberglass panels can effectively block the view and space, but there is no acoustic padding, so the rain is noisy and the direct sunlight is stuffy inside. To prevent the space from being too stuffy, the designers use tin sheets with heat insulation to block the heat.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The restaurant is on the first floor with an area of 165.2 meters. The glass restaurant at the back is transformed from the courtyard. The floor was originally concrete and had to be relayed to make it usable as an indoor space, so it is important to waterproof the floor. After removing the rocks, plants, and silt from the courtyard, the designers use concrete to raise the floor and make an interceptor trench underneath. After double disposal, even in heavy rain, the water will flow to the lower part of the floor and will not stay in the room.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project is a renovation of an old house. Is a three-story building on a traditional old street. The first floor is a commercial space, and the second floor and above are residences. The owner transformed it into a cozy restaurant with wine tasting and family gatherings and transformed the muddy backyard into a bright space with the designers' expansion. Corridor follows the character of the long and narrow old house, dividing the space into two areas: the dark bar and the lighted restaurant. Customized iron pieces are placed throughout the two spaces, and an art gallery adds color to the space.
CHALLENGE: Luodong, Yilan is a rainy place, and commercial spaces usually need to be completed within a month and a half. In this project, if the team waited until the rain stopped, the schedule would be affected. So, the designers started to deal with the flooring. The roof was covered with a waterproof canvas to prevent rainwater from seeping in, and the floor was re-piled, cemented, and ditched to channel the water out to keep the floor dry.
