DESIGN NAME: The O
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sailing Yacht
INSPIRATION: The inspiration comes from the glass buildings showing new technical possibilities, such as the iconic Bolle Nardini in Italy. The intention is firstly to adapt this ovoid glass architecture to sailing yachts so as to have larger and brighter spaces amplifying the connection with nature, and secondly to associate the most advanced systems in renewable energy. It is all about combining highly liveable luminous spaces, with the best technologies, a stylish aesthetic and no compromise on luxury.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The distinctive feature is the yacht shape with its superstructure styled as a glass ovoid housing a luminous panoramic open space, its elliptical cockpit on top with a 360 degrees view, and its terrace at sea level with deployable sides. Proximity with nature, luminosity and space onboard are unprecedent compared to existing sailing yachts. Under sail, the yacht captures energy from multi renewable sources with the wind, sun and waterflow, ensuring an efficient, silent and low emission cruising.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: From the convivial cockpit on top, to the loft styled interior and the aft platform plunging into the water, the progression onboard is obstacle free and the panoramic view unobstructed. Thanks to all around curved glass, users fully embrace the landscape from water to sky, and enjoy life at sea, while sensors give back in real time on systems which adjust the sails and power accordingly. Thereby, optimizing energy, reducing noise and emissions, as well as operating costs.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in 2021 and developed in 2022, France. Ready to be customized to the future owner wishes and built.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The yacht is built in aluminium with glass integrated in the superstructure. Only one single adaptative mould is required to shape all the glass panels. It reduces the complexity and price of the building process. Under sail, the yacht captures renewable energy thanks to self-reefing sails on free standing masts, white solar cells fitted on roof and retractable electric thruster pods acting also as hydrogenerators. It is a step further in energy self sufficiency.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Type: sailing monohull, Length overall : 42.0m, Beam max: 10.7m, Displacement: 240 tons, Gross tonnage: <300 GT, Draft: 3.7m/6.0m

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our investigation drives us to a cocoon shape, like an egg, which represents the primitive link between people and nature. Through the extensive use of structural curved glass from floor to ceiling and at 360 degrees, we succeed in merging indoor and outdoor in the 3 dimensions for an outstanding panorama. Also, an intelligent layout was searched to optimize usable space by limiting corridors. Another crucial study was to design the yacht around energy solutions that can be adapted along the yacht life and according to the progress of the suppliers.
CHALLENGE: One challenge was integrating the ovoid superstructure onboard plus the twin free standing masts and the energy systems while satisfying the naval architecture parameters of a seaworthy sailing yacht. Also, adjusting each structural glass panel to the adaptative double curved mould with curvature continuity between panels was challenging. Another stimulating task was to create a layout matching this ovoid shape with a functional arrangement ensuring at the same time conviviality for guests and privacy from crew.
