| DESIGN NAME: The Good Cup PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sustainable Packaging INSPIRATION: Every year, over 500 billion single-use plastic and paper cups are manufactured globally, generating a total of over 1 million tonnes of waste in plastic lids alone. As a designer, my mission has always been to create new codes, develop new materials/processes and implement the latest technology with brands and manufacturers in order to lead the next sustainable packaging revolution. As a father and as a fellow global citizen, I see even more urgency for our solution than ever before. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Good Cup is the industry most recent cutting-edge innovation in response to the global plastic crisis. The new, fully patented design is revolutionizing how the single-use paper cup is manufactured, consumed and recycled. Featuring an innovative extension to the structure of the cup, The Good Cup has an integrated lid that folds and locks into place, effectively eliminating the presence of and need for a plastic lid. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Same process, machine and operation as standard paper cup forming. The Good Cup saves the needs to produce additional plastic lid in the production. The Good Cup also saves 40% carton space in the entire supply chain as it removes the needs of lid cartons. This means 40% less carbon footprint in terms of transport as well as 40% additional saving too. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in July 2019 in Hong Kong and after two years cooperation, the paper cup manufacturer decided to be part of this project. In March 2022, the company Choose Planet A was created with the creator of The Good Cup as major share holder. Today The Good Cup is reaching packaging distributor globally. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Good Cup starts with the material (our paper is not coated with plastic inside, it has a coating that is bio-based, certified home compostable (breaking down in landfill too) and certified recyclable in paper stream (which is not the case for most paper cup in the market with PE coating) Then it continues with how it’s produced. Same process and machine as traditional paper cup. The Good Cup only has a paper extension from traditional paper cups (no additional energy compared to additional lids in plastic or other material). Along the years, thought my different career positions, the idea developed and took various forms. It’s only from July 2019, when I started my own green design studio that things became serious as I decided to spend time, energy and money to truly make this idea a reality. After more than 1000 tweaking, tests and hand-made samples, I approached one of the largest paper cup manufacturer in Asia. The goal was to benefit from a manufacturer experience to continue improving the design and ultimately make samples on production lines. CHALLENGE: The main obstacle was to create a cup that could easily been produced by any paper cup machine globally and save cost. Most sustainable solutions and plastic alternative are in general two to three times more costly in the packaging industry. The Good Cup is not only highly sustainable, it also offers cost savings.
