DESIGN NAME: Shwood
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Desk Lamp
INSPIRATION: How does light sound? How does craftsmanship and care for details sound? Light and sound provide us with emotions from our memories. Inspiration for Shwood came from an urge to surround myself with nature and materials that you can feel and relate to.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Shwood desk lamp is a concept that wants to elevate wood craftsmanship and help the user reduce their stress levels. Operating the lamp requires touching the wooden surface, sliding the center pillar through the outer structure, emitting the sound of solid wood pieces sliding with ever so little friction alongside each other. This is also how the luminaire got its name, combining the sound with the material resulting in Shwood. It's a piece of nature that stands alongside you to present you with light and a calming sensation.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Sliding the inner pillar up into position softly turns on the light. It's held into position by a small hook on the backside. By slightly dropping the inner pillar down and backwards the hook will connect with the ledge integrated on the inside of the outer wooden structure.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2021 in Stockholm and the concept was completed in august 2022 in Stockholm.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This concept was entirely made in Sketchup using Vray for renders. During the concept stage, hand sketches was used before a 3D printed mock-up were used for defining scale of the product and testing the operational element.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The luminaire is 25 cm in height when closed and 40 cm when it is all the way up. Width and depth are equally 7 cm. Beech wood is used for its ease of use, light color and environment friendly growing and harvest. Wooden pieces are mostly whole pieces without the need for screws or glue. The electrical parts for the LED light sources are hidden within the pillar and the bottom of the outer structure.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The idea of this lamp came to me rather quickly. It came from an urge to go back in time to a simpler life. A time where hand craftsmanship and natural materials was more commonplace and used more. I wanted to bring a piece of that into the high tech modern world. The connection with the wood when operating the lamp and hearing the wood slide and clunk is a manifestation to this urge. Much time was spent on researching wood types and objects that we interact with in everyday life.
CHALLENGE: The challenge for me was to portrait this feeling of nature and simpler life within in a digital concept. Having mediocre skill in 3D-modelling I began learning more about it until I completed a model I was happy with.
Playing around with the 3D printed mock-ups was also a challenge for me but not because of design technicalities rather because of my one and a half year old son who took a strong liking to them. After a few broken ones I did decide on the perfect model and size that I needed.
