DESIGN NAME: Polygon
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair
INSPIRATION: Inspired essentially by Scandinavian furniture design, Mac is fond of birch plywood and plywoods in general, as a furniture material. Scandinavian designers, Aalto, Wegner and Panton especially, have been the design heroes for Mac.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Polygon is a lounge-type chair; unique in its hexagonal construction. It is retro-futuristic Scandinavian in style.
It is positioned for a deep recline with a backrest angle set at 104 degrees, an angle found in research to be most comfortable. The upholstery is artificial reindeer pelt to give a fun hint to the northern Swedish heritage representing the designer. Sustainably sourced Scandinavian Birch b b grade plywood and Hoop plywood is used in its construction.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design is focused on lifestyle and comfort with particular consideration given to using sustainably sourced and ecologically friendly materials. The precision of the design enables the 45 components of the facets in the design, to be cut economically from the construction material, thereby reducing waste. Attention to the tilt of the seat on the undercarriage gives the chair the recline needed for ultimate comfort.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Polygon was a self initiated project that started in January 2022 in Sydney Australia.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Sustainably sourced high quality Finnish Birch plywood has been joined with high-end wood glue and Festool dominos of various sizes, screws that were used are concealed. It comprises 45 plywood pieces using precision angles. The design is finished with 2 sprayed coats of water-based clear.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Height 1095 mm x 950 mm width x 825 mm depth, weight: 21 kg.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: How strong could this geodesic design be? This was a leading question in the design planning.
In using the Festool dominos technique, how many Festool dominos and what array of sizes would be appropriate in this design? Much of the answer was resolved as the construction proceeded, mostly based on intelligent guesswork and prior knowledge of the materials and the Festool domino technique. Other designs in Mac Nordman's furniture range had utilised these techniques, but the form of the chair was quite different from others in the Nordman Design range.
How comfortable could a wooden lounge chair be? This was largely resolved, again by, the use of the 1:1 foam mock-ups and the prototype, as the playing with the recline adjustments and the actuality of sitting in the chair were paramount to determining it's comfort. The research is firm about the angle of comfort in regard to 104 degrees, but the adjustment of the seat assembly on the undercarriage was the deciding factor for lounge-ability.
CHALLENGE: Finding the intersecting angles of the geodesic design was a bit of a challenge and was undertaken while building it in prototype. The Foam 1:1 mock-ups and the final Medium Density Fibreboard prototype reaffirmed the calculations of the angles required for closed joints.
