PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interactive Product
INSPIRATION: Chinese character amnesia is a phenomenon whereby experienced Chinese users forget how to write the characters which were previously well known to them. The occurrence of Chinese character amnesia is not only an envidence of how the rapid development of Human-Computing Interaction (HCI) has impacted people’s lifestyle but also represents that people are inevitably accepting the disconnection from Chinese culture, history, and spirit. The problem remains unsolved due to a lack of motivation.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: the design translates Chinese characters (visual sensory) into distinctive melodies (auditory-driven) generated by a self-identified mechanism. These melodies are separated and hidden into cubes. By interacting with a set of artifacts, the user shall validate the melodies carefully and reform a correct sequence of the character. We define this as an auditory-driven, tangible, and entertaining device, and we envision it will trigger and develop motivations to remind and re-learn Chinese.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Chinese character amnesia is a phenomenon whereby experienced Chinese users forget how to write the characters which were previously well known to them. The phenomenon is specifically tied to prolonged and extensive use of electronic input methods, especially for Chinese oversea returnees. The occurrence of Chinese character amnesia is not only an evidence of how the rapid development of Human-Computing Interaction (HCI) has impacted on people’s lifestyle, but also respresents people are inevitably accepting the disconnection from Chinese culture, history, and spirit. The problem remains unsolved due to a lack of motivation in re-learning characters and the neglectable impact on daily lifes. We aim to raise the awareness of Chinese amnesia, and further remind, rebuild and enhance the interest and memory development of Chinese characters through a multi-sensory and playful approach. We have conducted questionnaires, interviews and other innovative interaction method to identify problem spaces and bridge gaps. The result obtained through our userability test reflected an improvement in partcipants’ learning motivation and a reduced effect on character amnesia.
CHALLENGE: Chinese character amnesia as a "wicked problem", first it is hard to find out useful researches and essays, second the problem itself very few of designers tried to touched with solutions, we are pioneers to tackle with such problem.
