| DESIGN NAME: Florencia PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lounge Chair INSPIRATION: The Ghost Orchid, native to South Florida is characterized by its lack of leaves, making it seem like it floats in mid-air. Latching onto tree bark with its roots and swing outward. With its swinging sepals and petals and the feeling of suspension of the levitating flower, the Florencia lounge chair encases this enchanting sensation. The seemingly seamless frame imitated the petals and their direction. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Florencia Lounge Chair features a smooth continuous frame with seamless zero hardware joints. Making the chair simple to construct reduces the need for extra tools, hardware, and instructions. The hooked leather or cotton offers a comfortable and beautiful spot to unwind. The hooked cloth relies on gravity to hold the sitter,creating a hammock feel that adapts to the user's contour.Its simplicity makes the lifespan of the chair last longer than most,easily adapting into any room and cleaned. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The user simply hooks their chosen fabric over the backrest and slits in the armrest and sinks into the hammock chair. Being able to easily remove the fabric means one can switch out or clean the fabric at ease as well as clean the casted aluminum frame to maintain its luminosity. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: February 2022 and finished in May 2022 College for Creative Studies. Was exhibited at the College for Creative Studies Student Exhibition and Industry Day in May 2022. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Casted Aluminium Frame SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 939.8 mm x 889 mm x 1016 mm Height of seat pan to ground : 431.8 mm Height of arm rest to ground : 660.4 mm TAGS: Interchangeable, Hammock Chair, Lounge Chair, Seamless, Organic, Simple Design RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research process began with a mood board, where I researched interior design and orchids that would encase the sensation I wanted to demonstrate. Along with the overall aesthetic, there were points I wanted to raise regarding the lifespan of furniture and having furniture that adapts to a home with an easily interchangeable fabric that requires zero hardware. CHALLENGE: The hardest of designing the Florencia chair was deciding how the chair would allow for the fabric to hang downward to provide a slouchy hammock feel and still providing structural support in a seemingly thin and delicate design.
