DESIGN NAME: Shang Long
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Funeral Home
INSPIRATION: This funeral home that offers end-of-life ceremony is built with a whole new concept. With warm light and subdued colors, the space is filled with tranquil atmosphere. Spacious walking space will not make body and mind feel oppressed in the enclosed environment. Unlike a traditional funeral home, the somber atmosphere gives a new definition the space. It is not only a resting place for people during their on-way life journey, but also a quiet and comfortable space for family and friends.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Shang Long Funeral Home is a contemporary and simple space. The circle behind the counter symbolizes the fullness of life and eternity. In a circle, the beginning meets the end, which signifies completeness and wholeness. The front lobby features peaceful and calming colors and marble. The natural and pure white, elegant and tranquil gray as well as soothing and peaceful blue embody the simple and pure brand image. Without complicated decorative materials, the simple and clean design reduces the sense of oppression invoked by a traditional funeral home and creates a warm and peaceful space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The warmth of wood creates a humanistic common area, while the smoothness of the curved walls conveys the human-centered design concept. The large white space on the wall provides a breathing space and adds a quiet and elegant atmosphere.
Earthy colors, beige, and warm are presented in the lounge, making it the epitome of purity. The tables and chairs are in dark gray schemes, which inject a sense of visual weight to build a visually balanced scene. The soft light brings a clean and bright ambience, enriching the overall layers and warming people's hearts.
Upon entering the Buddha Hall, the sacred and solemn statue of Buddha comes into view. Devotion fills the heart of everyone gently. On the shrine, contemporary lines give a neat and tidy atmosphere to the space, while the mixing of different materials on the back wall and the large circle on the canopy soften the rigid linear structure. Under the diffusion of light particles, a solemn and stately environment for Buddha worshipping ceremony is created.
The main entrance is inspired by white color scheme to synchronize the harmony between the interior and exterior. Simple lines and wall materials of different textures complement each other, creating a minimalist entrance. The greenery and plants bring green, living nature into the lifeless and dull space. Shang Long Funeral Home is the place where people remember their loved one with love.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The curved counter creates an integrated look for left and right spaces to bring a sense of harmony. Different spaces and appearances are created by light, shadow and partitions which symbolizes a new beginning in a different space. The wheel of karma is unpredictable. Like the space, life is filled with twists and turns. The light and shadow separate the fields. Thus, the design with different aspects and perceptions is created.
CHALLENGE: The spacious and comfortable memorial area allows family members and friends to come together to remember their loved one in privacy. The wooden cabinets in different shades create a sense of order and sequence.
The consistent color palette reveals a transcendent calmness. Shang Long Funeral Home offers heartwarming customized memorial service so that people can remember their loved one through an electronic screen instead of a photo.
