| DESIGN NAME: Where Dreams Lie PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ring INSPIRATION: The inspiration for my design is Dream. Dreams come in all shapes and sizes, whether it is a fantasy or a stage of sleep which leads to my design as a combination of two rings into one. My design outline inspiration comes from deep-sea creatures because for me there are where dreams lie. You can never find sea creatures that look the same and they are often filled with magical colours and outlines, and sometimes they glow or even carry a little light themself. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The first unique property of this ring is it can be worn in three different ways. The combination of two rings creates an outstanding effect that will definitely define you from any crowd. Another unique property of my design is between all the colour sapphires, there are scattered Alexandrites which are popularly known as 'Emeralds by day, rubies by night' due to its color change phenomena which causes a shift from its green hues to red when interacting with different types of lighting. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This ring comes in two parts and can be worn separately or together. Ring 1 suits for everyday wear and Ring 2 suits for an evening outing. The combination of two rings creates an outstanding effect that will definitely define you from any crowd. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2021 and was completed in January 2021, Hong Kong. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Where Dreams Lie ring is set entirely in 18k yellow gold with a constellation of more than 20 carats of over 900 colour sapphires in 100 different shades, adorned with Alexandrite, Tanzanite, Tsavorite, white and champagne diamonds. As a result of more than 500 hours of engineering and craft, the cross finger ring is finished with set stones in all dimensions with 4 different types of settings: Bezel Setting, Semi-Bezel setting, Gypsy setting, and Micro pave setting. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Ring 1 Dimension: Width 49mm, Depth 20mm, Height 33mm; Ring 2 Dimension: Width 78mm, Depth 17mm, Height 33mm; Total weight of two rings: 36.61gm. TAGS: Fine jewellery, Ring, 18k Gold, Gold,Colour Sapphire, Alexandrite RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The inspiration for my design is dream. Dreams come in all shapes and sizes, whether it is a fantasy or a stage of sleep which leads to my design as a combination of two rings into one. We can never catch dreams in their physical form therefore I have leaned toward a freeform outline. The outline of my design mostly came from the inspiration of sea creatures but for my stone layout, the inspiration came from the different stages of sleep. The scattered colour stones on Ring 1 represent the stages of sleep from 1-3, light and scattered; The colourful Ring 2 represents stage 4 of sleep REM which is where we dream, where it is full of possibilities and wonderful colours. CHALLENGE: Using dream as my inspiration was difficult to start with, something so well known yet shapeless. After deciding on my design layout, the technical part became extremely difficult too. Each tube connecting to my ring is handcrafted hollow internally to give the stone the best chance to shine. At the same time, finding the perfect balance of support for the structure and maximising the number of colour stones was definitely not easy. As a result, a constellation of more than 20 carats of over 900 colour sapphires in 100 different shades is adorned with white and champagne diamonds.
