INSPIRATION: The Lantern Festival is one of the traditional Chinese festivals, and every family will participate in activities related to 'light.' This work was invited by the local government to be the welcoming light for the event. The overall work uses the name of the exhibition area ' Butterfly with Flowers' to extend the impression of 'peacock, flower, and butterfly.' Combined with the mechanical technique, the result is an eye-catching work of both brilliance and quality. In the end, a three-minute performance of the peacock, hoping that the visitors can feel happiness and surprise.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design team set the inspiration of 'gorgeous' and 'hundred flowers' in the design. The work features not only the portrayal of flowers, butterflies, and the peacock but also exquisite dynamic details. The lantern uses a large number of mechanical techniques, and the internal structure adds RGB full color changing LEDs so that the whole lantern can present the dynamic performance of flower blooming, butterfly dancing, and peacock displaying while rotating on its own.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When visitors arrived at the exhibition area, they could see a proud peacock standing at the top of a hundred flowers at the entrance to greet the crowd. The peacock dances to the music and stretches its tail feathers around the flowers, while the smoke and laser lights delicately hit the flowers, attracting Taiwanese butterflies to come and collect nectar. The vivid and majestic dynamic performance has changed the impression of traditional lanterns. The lanterns are no longer just a display of internal light.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project finished in February 2022 in Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design team used the lantern fabric on the surface and partly used the computerized color spray with more saturated and vivid colors, which can depict the appearance of the stamens, peacock tail feathers, and butterfly patterns more vividly. The structure of the skeleton is made of iron, because the whole set of lanterns will rotate by itself during the performance, plus there will be a peacock displayed along the way, so the structure is strengthened. As for the internal structure, the design team added LED light sets that can encode RGB full color changes, which can change the frequency of the music.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The entire lantern is 10 meters tall (10 meters when the peacock's tail feathers are unfurled and 8.5 meters when they are closed) and 6 meters in diameter. The lanterns can rotate on their own, and the whole work uses a lot of mechanical techniques. When the music starts, the butterfly's wings will start to open and close with frequency, and each petal of the flower can stretch outward independently, just like a scene of budding.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design team uses three images to convey the arrival of the Chinese New Year: butterflies flying, flowers in bloom, and a peacock spreading its tail feathers. The combination of kapok, hibiscus, and paulownia, along with Taiwanese butterflies, purple crow butterflies, and the peacock that symbolizes good luck and happiness in the East, creates a stunning lantern show. The peacock happily walks into the fragrant beauty of the flowers and opens its tail feathers to show the blessing of good luck and prosperity for the New Year.
CHALLENGE: The lantern is presented in three ways: 360-degree rotation, 10 meters high, and a lot of mechanical movement, which is the first time the design team tries to integrate different mechanical techniques into one work. The opening and closing of the flowers, the swinging of the butterfly wings, the unfolding of the peacock's tail feathers, and the 360 degree rotation are all part of the work to overcome the problem of centrifugal force generated by the rotation after reinforcing the structure. In addition, it is one of the difficulties to integrate mechanical dynamics and lighting into the work without interfering with each other.
