DESIGN NAME: Nightside
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Table Lamp
INSPIRATION: Inspired by his love of reading at bedtime, Jess Gupta realized he needed a table lamp that would allow him to read without waking his partner at night. After trying every type of book-light and headlamp, he realized he needed a light that could hold its position and not require constant adjustment. Inspired by theatrical spotlights and their bright yet even light, Jess turned to optics in order to recreate this effect. The result is a lamp that flips the traditional bedside lamp paradigm on its head: instead of flooding the immediate area with bright light that diffuses rapidly, the Nightside lamp illuminates the immediate area with low light but with the option of directing a bright beam of light wherever it is needed. The result is a much more energy efficient lamp that is perfect for those who want a more relaxing and calming environment at night.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Nightside lamp is a low-light lamp designed for those who want to create a warm and relaxing atmosphere at night. When closed, the Nightside lamp generates a warm glow that illuminates the immediate area. But when more light is needed, a press of the top reveals an extendable spotlight feature that can be used for bedtime activities such as reading and writing, all without bothering anyone else in the room. The spotlight feature utilizes a patented optical projection system to generate a bright yet even spotlight that can be directed anywhere, up to ninety degrees. Because it uses only one LED, the lamp is highly energy efficient and runs on one watt of power.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Nightside lamp is operated via an integrated dimmer knob on the front of the lamp. To activate the spotlight feature, the user pushes down on the top of the lamp, which extends a reflector upward. The reflector can be rotated up and down to direct the spotlight where it is needed. The source of the spotlight is a single LED in the base of the lamp, which is focused through three lenses within the lamp body, generating a bright yet consistent pool of light.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Design development was started in San Francisco in 2018 and production began in 2022.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Design began with research into optics and how to create the desired spotlight effect within the generally accepted dimensions for a consumer table-top lamp product. The optics research involved frequent testing using an optical bench and numerous lens shapes and focal lengths. Numerous LED configurations were also tested to yield the best quality light in terms of intensity, color temperature, and color rendering index. The prototype design phase lasted two years and consisted of numerous iterations to achieve the best user experience and consistent high level product performance. User experience data was gathered via the distribution of beta units to select participants and collecting feedback on a regular basis. A diversity of use cases was sought, including bedtime readers, parents using the lamp for nighttime diaper changes, among others. User feedback was channeled into subsequent designs, and this process was replicated several times.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge in developing the Nightside lamp was the complexity of the optical projection system within the lamp. This system requires precise alignment of several components in order to generate the focused and bright spotlight that is the central feature of the product. The product also relies on three different moving parts for its operation, so designing for consistent performance was critical.
