DESIGN NAME: Surround
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence
INSPIRATION: Home is where the heart sets in, where memories strengthen the bonds. Unlike standard living space layouts, the designer arranges the functional areas differently from others. To ensure sufficient sunlight and comfort privacy, the living room is placed at the back of the house. The flow is relatively novel, starting from the entrance that includes an aerial yoga space with a wall mirror. Each transition is made sure to be smooth and clean.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The yoga space at the entrance is decorated with a giant wall mirror. While broadening the spatial perception, the sunlight shines in and is reflected to make the place more illuminated. The big beam in the middle of the ceiling is rounded in a curved shape at the edge, reducing the bulkiness and sharpness. The overall common space is designed to be semi-open to keep the natural lighting in. With the central partition as the primary division, the flow can be smoother and more fluid.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In addition, the extra family room reconstructs the bedroom area, expanding the common space to strengthen the family bonds. The designer also makes great use of the high ceiling staircases, creating a bookshelf wall for owners to store their comics and models.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was finished in December 2021 in Taichung, Taiwan.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The yoga space is as well combined with the wardrobe into a closet. Its gray palette on the wall and the wardrobe contribute to a mature vibe. The arrangement gives the owner a display shelving for the collections of bags, creating corners like shopping in a store. Some greenery can be seen from the second-floor bedroom, making the space nice and calm for the resident.
CHALLENGE: Building materials are selected based on eco-friendly, energy-efficient, and sustainable concepts. Heat insulation anti-UV glass materials are applied to achieve energy sufficiency. As well as the selection of air-conditioner, electronic appliances, and led lights all of these reduce the waste of electricity. The whole building has its water piping system renewed to prevent water leaks, while the faucet design shortens the opening and closing time to reduce water waste.
