DESIGN NAME: The Silence Voices of a War
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Scenic Design
INSPIRATION: This project aimed to create a design that translates feelings of loss, pain, uncertainty, and grief based on the ideas that Euripides addresses in Trojan Women. My inspiration was to materialize a space in ruins resulting from a post-war period so that the audience can experience through the performance, a desire for empathy and compassion for minorities, who suffer from the consequences of war. Also, the inspiration was to provide a space that makes the audience relate to situations that humanity has faced and still encounters to this day.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The use of cold colors in contrast and in dark for the surrounding thunderstorms aimed to achieve a melancholic space that reflects their state of mind, in addition to sharp and heavy hanging objects and ashes that resemble broken and destroyed pieces of architecture and the rubble of a life that does not exist anymore. All these elements are working together as symbols of the Trojans broken lives. It takes advantage of the entire performance space in a more intimate space with the audience.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The performance space is surrounded by a black box with the backing and ceiling on a LED screen. The box has the goal of creating a claustrophobic space and the screens should reproduce the state of mind of the characters, which is symbolized by thunderstorms and dense clouds. The actors may enter and leave the space by countering the ashes piles and stones and get to the main central ruin by an entrance on stage-right. The ashes and black sand go all the way to the edges of the stage so that, the actors have a clear space to perform and dance and be closer to the viewers.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This idea was a project designed for Scenography and the Classical Script class (master's level) at the University of Kansas in 2021 as part of an assignment for that class. The theater space is experimental and was adapted from the University's theater space to create a space that is more intimate and closer to the audience.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: I have done a lot of research to understand Euripides' intentions, and studied each of the roles individually as well as how they interact and develop with each other. Hence, I built a mood board with images and songs that could translate their emotions, and photos from real wars to provide a stronger and more accurate visual reference to where the women would be placed. Then, I made sketches with the study of texture and materials from the ancient world. Later, I analyzed some lighting studies to finally, with the help of a 3D modeling software, model the stage elements with the respective texture and materials.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Designed for a Proscenium theater-type with a more intimate performance space with the stage closer to the audience. For the materials, it was used LED screen for images and video projection, natural white stones, black sand, and ashes.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: All the elements were based on the central question: What remains after a war? With that in mind, research and analysis were done taking into consideration the context of the Trojan-Greek war, the narrative, the author’s intentions, and the situation that served as inspiration for the story and the characters, so that, every element of this set was designed to cause emotions to the audience and connect with the actions from the actors.
CHALLENGE: The women in this play are the voices of minorities in wars and their need for resilience to survive. Therefore, the obstacle to overcome in this project was to fully translate the ancient Greek intentions into a contemporary but accurate performance space, considering the concept keywords: Pain, loss, melancholy, oppression, inhumanity, and resilience. Moreover, it should provide an emotional connection with the audience so that would achieve the main intention of the author which is the human ability to create empathy.
