DESIGN NAME: Lightwist
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Floor Lamp
INSPIRATION: I wish to bring a more relaxing indoor atmosphere for user. Lightwist is inspired by the charming kaleidocycle. The main transforming structure is a new kinetic structure which comes out of my numerous prototypes. When turning on the lights, Lightwist will gradually change its shape and seems like the real creature breathing with the warm light. When users come back home, users can follow the speed of the transformation to adjust their speed to have a more comfortable experience of light.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Lightwist is a dynamic floor lamp with a new-type kinetic geometry structure which is composed of 88 paper Tetrahedrons. When it turns light on, it will gradually twist itself and change the entire shape and looks like an alive creature breathing. Along with the bionic movement of Lightwist and the warm lighting, it could provide a distinctive atmosphere for users and bring a charming experience of lighting.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When the light was turn on, Lightwist will gradually change its shape and it looks like an alive creature breathing along with the warm light. People can follow the speed of the transformation to adjust their breathing.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2016 in Taiwan and finished in January 2019 in Taiwan.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Mathematics affects our world and geometry has a huge influence on our daily life. No matter where we are, geometry plays an important role on everyday life and we are surrounded by space and shape of things. Furthermore, the theory of the nature is based on geometry as well. Geometry not only influences the visual appearance of product or spatial understanding but also affects how we works. Exploration of the potential design directions or fields will give inspiration on future design.
CHALLENGE: Lightwist is built by a solid research on the knowledge of transformable structures and geometry. Making the good use on the rule and knowledge of Kaleidocycle and kinetic structures is an important start for the best structure of transformable floor lamp design. Besides, the most challenge is to make numerous paper prototypes to find out the new transforming structure.
In addition, making prototypes of a small scale into the final product in a real size is also an difficult section. I have to deal with the materials, mechanical issues, and the software coding of the automatic transformable structure
