RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Preserving is the main idea of the object. Preserving the craftmanship, medium and the preserving as the function. The starting point of the design process is to use studio made glass as the medium of the design, because the endangered tradition of glass making is being applied to the Unesco’s World heritage lit. Using glass as a medium the designer takes action in preserving the ancient craftsmanship.
CHALLENGE: The challenge in the process is to find the perfect flow for the colors, so that the appearance is remains fresh. A simplified shape can become multi-dimensional in glass medium. There is the visual layer of glass, how does the glass reflect, how will the colors look in different light. Above all there are also the historical layers of glass, the origin of Finnish glass making and the rare knowledge behind the craftsmanship.
