| DESIGN NAME: Iko PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hanging Chair INSPIRATION: As designers and product developers in the field of workplace wellbeing and wellness, we were looking for a unique chair for our own office. Every cool office should have hanging chairs and retreats for relaxing or talking on the phone. This is what we wanted too. In our research we found nothing suitable. It was mostly a poor design, low quality workmanship or unfortunate choice of materials which were not worthy of our standards. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A levitating sphere, a focus capsule, a refuge for the senses. Not just a hanging chair, but a functional design object. A retreat in the middle of an open office. The form was chosen in such a way that the object can integrate well into the most diverse environments. After analysing the basic geometric bodies, the icosahedron was quickly found as one of the five Platonic solids (regular polygons). Hence the name: iko. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The iko. can be used as a retreat to read, focus on something, make a phone call, work, take a power nap or simply chill - all in such a way that people in the same room are not disturbed and vice versa. In addition, the iko. is a wonderful, safe and comfortable playground for children, especially when the back cushion is removed. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The idea was born in May 2020 and the final prototype ready for small series production was finished in February 2022. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main structure consists of wooden elements that are machine-made and surface-treated by hand, as well as metal cylinders that are CNC-milled. The triangular acoustic panels are pressed in a special process and covered with pure wool acoustic textile. The upholstery parts are also covered with wool fabric, whereby the seat part is filled with grain husk, which guarantees a healthy and pleasant stay. To carry through the sustainable choice of materials, the iko. hangs from hemp ropes. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Shipping package for self-assembly: 1200 x 800 x 600 (EUR pallet) Minimum required room height: 2400 mm Assembled dimansions: 1200 x 1100 x 1330 Weight: 50 kg In principle, the iko. is delivered by our assembly partners, assembled on site and professionally installed in relation to the ceiling. TAGS: hanging chair, lounge, room in room, wellbeing at work, refuge, acoustic, open office, home office RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The iko. is the actual result of the previous research for such a product - as no relevant product could be found, we decided to create one ourselves. However, the most interesting investigation has only just begun: During the launch phase, we try to find out where the product can best be positioned and which target audience will choose it. The results so far are promising. CHALLENGE: The shape was found quickly, the interplay of cross struts and the connecting parts was solved in a technically ingenious way. A special manufacturing process was developed for the acoustic panels. But the greatest difficulty was to achieve a comfortable, pleasant, fitting interior (upholstery).
