| DESIGN NAME: YiQi Hanzi PRIMARY FUNCTION: Teaching Cards INSPIRATION: To people who don't know Chinese, Chinese characters always look like complicated drawings. I want to use design thinking and drawings to make the 'character drawings' understandable to everyone to spread Chinese culture and the beauty of Chinese characters. This learning method makes it easy for people to visualize the meaning of the characters to better understand and memorize characters. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Learn Chinese through creativity. YiQi Hanzi flashcards make Chinese learning fun and engaging. YiQi Hanzi flashcards use visuals to enhance memory. Characters are visual. Use design thinking and creativity to make characters understandable visually. YiQi Hanzi flashcards tell the stories & culture through characters. Presenting them on characters with word explanations aside can help people understand fully and learn quickly. Radicals & components are the keys to learning characters. YiQi Hanzi flashcards tell how different parts play the role with clear visual elements. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: There are 140 cards, print double-sided, so a total of 280 characters. Besides the physical flashcards, the QR code on each card connects to the YiQi Hanzi Online Learning Center with more learning resources. Includes words, sentences, videos, writing strokes, and more to help people learn characters easily and holistically. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2020 and finished in January 2021 in San Francisco. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Physical paper, learning flashcards SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: card size: 9cm*12cm packaging size: 10.3cm*9.7cm*12.5cm TAGS: #chinesecharacters, #education, #flashcardsdesign, #learnchinese, #language, #education RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Every character creation is based on research on the history of the character. To reference how a character was created at the beginning, what's the revolution it experienced, how Simplified Chinese changed the forms, and if there are any stories behind a character. CHALLENGE: The history and development are lost in the time. Sometimes there is no reference to a character that can be used. I need to think creatively about how to use visuals to form the characters in a way that makes the most sense.
