DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Furoshiki Collection from Upcycled Rugs

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Seating and Containers

INSPIRATION:
The collection is inspired by the traditional Japanese art of fabric wrapping, furoshiki, in which items are wrapped using squares of fabric. By folding and tying the fabric in different ways, a single object can serve many purposes.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Furoshiki is a collection of everyday objects designed with the idea of finding new functionality for the remnants from El Espartano carpet tiles. Since it is a composite material, nylon and pvc, it is very difficult to recycle. That is why the refunctionalization was the best option so as to avoid throwing these materials to the garbage. Regarding the aesthetic of the pieces, both seating and containers have soft curves and simple lines that bring the language of the material to life.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This new collaboration began with the idea of exploring upcycling. One of Luciana s passions is to recover and reuse materials for the creation of new objects. On this occasion, she worked with the design team at El Espartano to develop Furoshiki.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in 2020. By mid 2021 we were working on the first prototypes. It was presented in the Rossana Orlandi Guiltless Plastic competition, selected as a finalist and exhibited at the National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo da Vinci, within the framework of Milan Design Week 2021.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Handmade products made from El Espartano scrap materials. The seams were carefully developed. They are the color accent and the common thread of the collection. In its realization, remnants of threads from the weaving of the carpets were used. The concept of upcycling brought to every detail of the product.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Stool S: 450 x 450 x 470mm Stool L: 950 x 950 x 350mm Bowl S: 220 x 220 x 100mm Bowl L: 220 x 220 x 330mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Carpet tiles are transformed into the seating and containers that make up the collection. The pieces have soft curves and simple lines that bring the language of the material to life. With the premise of reusing materials and working in three dimensions, the project developed through a trial and error process that allowed the designers to understand the structural possibilities of the tiles as a material. Through recovering discarded materials and giving them new meaning, Furoshiki promotes caring for our environment and speaks of object permanence and traditions over time.

CHALLENGE:
Achieving a balance between design and the use of scrap materials, the challenge was to find the best shape and to reuse the materials to create pieces that are consistent with the company philosophy.

El Espartano

PROFILE:
Founded more than 75 years ago, El Espartano is an Argentine owned company dedicated to the design, development, manufacture and commercialization of flooring products. Its four largest product lines include carpets, area rugs, modular carpets and sport turf. The company has several divisions that provide solutions for different market segments such as hotels, corporate offices, residential spaces and sports venues. From the production of its first handmade carpet to today, it has constantly evolved, incorporating new technologies and expanding its industrial facilities. Currently, El Espartano has two manufacturing plants of its own where, through a vertically integrated system, it carries out all the production processes. With its own inhouse textile design equipment, engineers, and experts in the craft, El Espartano has become the leading company in the market. The careful selection of raw materials, the creativity of its professionals, and ongoing technological innovation have enabled the company to produce a variety of products of international quality that bear the distinctive seal of the company. El Espartano is committed to the practice of the craft in accordance with the highest standards of production and service. It holds international standard certifications and its excellence continues to be confirmed through the trust of its customers. It exports its products to countries in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa. The Sustainable Design Laboratory is a space for exploration, where the company develops projects in collaboration with designers and artists, in line with guidelines that promote sustainability and design. About El Espartano’s Sustainable Design Laboratory Quality and sustainability are part of El Espartano’s fundamental values. These ideas are part of its dna and shape the spirit of the Sustainable Design Laboratory. In this experimental space, it develops products that make a difference in how they understand the environment, by combining design with the multiple virtues of the fibers used. Sustainability is at the heart of the Lab, along with an appreciation for natural and synthetic fibers, and a desire to make an impact on the design community through its work. Projects are guided by the constant search for new ways to reinterpret scrap materials, reuse raw materials, and reduce textile waste. At the same time, as active members of the textile community, the team at the Lab strives to broaden the value of design and expand its visibility in Argentina and around the world. Working with both its own designs and in collaboration with different artists, designers, architects and creatives, the Lab brings unique pieces to life that are almost works of art rather than interior design. Encouraging creativity and investigation, El Espartano’s Sustainable Design Laboratory makes its advanced looms and production processes available to artists and designers so that they can use new materials to broaden the creative horizons of the community.
