| DESIGN NAME: Marshmallow PRIMARY FUNCTION: Stool INSPIRATION: On my way finding a hot recipe for a design stool that seems almost too tasty to sit on – inspired by muffin and cupcake baking as well as whipped cream and candies. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: No conventional closed mold is used to manufacture the soft seat. The foam expands freely from below through the steel frame structure, giving it its shape. The steel frame is a formative element due to its matrix-like use. Every stool is unique. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Due to the production technique this stool is not a visual still life. The seat seems to be growing and flowing. The shiny surface surprises by the fact that the seat is not solid but soft and comfortable to sit on PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project startet in Istanbul/Turkey where I made first trials and prototypes. In my nowadays hometown Cologne/Germany I finished the design, researched and made many trials until I was able to produce the final 'Marshmallow' soft foam stool. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Material: steel, polyurethane foam The metal frame is industrially manufactured. The foam expands from underneath through the metal frame structure. Because of this "natural" way of expanding, the seat looks smooth and creamy – since there is no conventional closed mold used every piece turns out unique. Afterwards the soft foam seat gets coated to get a glossy finish and make the seat durable to mechanical stress and UV. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Low stool: Width 370 mm / Depth 370 mm / Height 480 mm Bar stool: Width 370 mm / Depth 370 mm / Height 780 mm TAGS: soft, foam, stool, unique, sugar, candy, cream, flow RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: I invented and built a special machine to apply the coating finish which gives the final look and protects the seat. The machine rotates the stool on X- and Y-axis to achieve a perfect finish and prevent irregularities and drippings. NAME: Paul Ketz PROFILE: Paul Ketz is a product designer from Germany. Growing up in the countryside he wanted to become an inventor, a job that seemed non-existing. As a teenager Ketz went to Cologne and discovered the subject of product design. After graduating in 2014 he moved to Istanbul where he started his design studio. Since then the work of him is not limited to predicates like practically or helpful. Designing for the inner child Paul Ketz creates adventurous objects with emotional value: “There is no need for another chair to just sit on”. Serious fun for everyday life. |
