DESIGN NAME: The Labyrinth Collection Maze
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Area Rugs
INSPIRATION: Inspired by an aerial photograph of the boxwood gardens at Chateau de Villandry in Loire Valley, France, I studied hedge formations around the world and was struck by the labyrinth tradition of hedge mazes that can be traced back through religious traditions and myths in many countries. The names of each rug references my research and points to a historic maze or significant place from which these designs originate, including the "Lucca" labyrinth in the Cathedral of San Maritino in Italy.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Labyrinth Collection area rugs brings the mythical tradition of mazes to a luxury, decorative design element. The hand-tufted rugs translate the traditional hedge maze into a soft, patterned rug with a raised pattern that mimics the hedge walls. Their asymmetrical patterns preserve the maze designs in a way that makes it possible to trace with your feet as you walk across this unique rug, and the five standard colorways are inspired by timeless natural elements, including "Boxwood" green.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: These rugs are designed to be used in intimate rooms such as the living room, study, or bedroom, and are meant to be experienced with bare feet. The bamboo silk pattern has a slight sheen that produces variations in tone under different lighting conditions. The design recalls meditation labyrinths and are designed to bring a sense of peace, and a centering element to the room.
