DESIGN NAME: Sky
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Expo Pavilion
INSPIRATION: The Saudi Expo Pavilion deliberately avoids sinuous and over-complicated forms, difficult to apprehend by the visitors. Standing as a self-contained, prismatic volume, this distinctive landmark speaks of a solid, determined, trustworthy country.
The beautifully crafted structure rises from the ground upwards, symbolizing a firmly grounded society with unlimited ambitions. The simplicity of its lines and its construction quality represent a society that values beauty in the essence of things.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The building stands as an inclined volume rising from the ground towards the sky, symbolizing Saudi Arabia as a country firmly rooted in its heritage but changing towards the future.
The exhibition is based on engaging immersive audiovisual experiences and fosters visitor interaction. Audiovisuals are self-explanatory, not requiring voice-over narrations to avoid multi-lingual translations. The contents reflect Saudi society, heritage and future, and reveal many unknown aspects of The Kingdom.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The main challenges for an Expo Pavilion are:
-Attract as many visitors as possible and absorb all of them into the exhibition and other public areas without long queue lines
-Share with the visitors the essential features of the country's society, heritage, nature, future vision, etc
-Generate a lasting impression in the visitors once they leave
So far, the Saudi Pavilion has received over 3 million visitors, and the public considers it one of the most exciting pavilions at the Expo.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Saudi Arabia Expo Pavilion is located in the Opportunity Sector at the Dubai Expo 2020. It was opened to the public in October 2021, and up to February 2022, it has received over 3 million visitors.
The Expo will be closed in April 2022, but the Pavilion will remain a legacy building integrated into the new District 2020 area. This mixed urban development will integrate residential, cultural, and technical facilities.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: As foreign designers of the Saudi national Pavilion, we considered it essential to integrate into the project Saudi creative collaborators to generate an accurate and exciting portrait of the Kingdom in all its complexity.
The building should represent Saudi society: young, cultured, diverse, deeply rooted in its heritage and homeland, but bold and ambitious, open to the world. The design team traveled across the country to absorb its diversity and incorporate it into the project.
CHALLENGE: Designing a national pavilion for a world Expo is a challenging task. Building and contents must represent the country in all its complexity: nature, heritage, society, etc. In a limited space and time, one must encompass a vast and diverse reality being sensitive to all the nuances involved.
In our case, the goal was to portray a country changing in every aspect, opening to the world, proud of its heritage but aiming for a bright future, revealing many unknown facets of the Kingdom.
