DESIGN NAME: Vaask
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Permanent Hand Sanitizing Dispenser
INSPIRATION: The pandemic exposed the design failure of traditional hand sanitizer options — always-empty automatic dispensers, inaccurate sensors that create constant messes and drips, and foul-smelling gels that dry out hands. With so many issues, it's no surprise that many people avoid hand sanitizer. Vaask Founder and accomplished engineer Jon Olsen developed the company's namesake hand sanitizing system to be a sustainable, touchless, permanent fixture in modern interiors.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Vaask is a permanent, touchless hand sanitizing fixture designed to be recessed into walls.
- Premium finishes: Available in custom powder coating, plated metal or custom finish options.
- Precise dispensing: Features a PalmPilotⓇ hand sensor that eliminates drips and mess.
- Simple visual alerts: Easily customizable, multi-colored LEDs draw in users. They also alert maintenance personnel when it's time to refill.
- Large capacity: Holds twice the sanitizer of typical dispensers.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Vaask is designed to be recessed into walls and hardwired to AC power to reduce maintenance. (No batteries needed.) Crafted of cast aluminum with an array of custom powder-coated finish options, Vaask's array of multi-colored LEDs both attract users and alert maintenance personnel when it's time to refill. A PalmPilotⓇ sensor detects hands, minimizing mess, while a precision pump can be adjusted to dispense your preferred exact amount of sanitizer every time. The touchless system demonstrates a facility’s long-term commitment to cleanliness, offering an easy solution for hand hygiene that keeps us all healthier.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Vaask Founder Jon Olsen built the first hand hygiene dispenser prototype in March 2020 using his home entryway table, a white bowl and black faucet. Over the course of several months, Jon refined the product through numerous prototypes based on feedback sought from healthcare industry professionals, architects, designers and end users. Vaask exhibited at a number of industry trade shows and educational programs across the United States in 2021, with more planned in 2022.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The typical hand sanitizer dispenser design is an afterthought, as manufacturers view it only as a way to sell pricey sanitizer refills. By contrast, Vaask Founder Jon Olsen designed the company's namesake hand sanitizing system to solve the existing hand hygiene experience's many failures. With feedback from health industry professionals, architects, designers and end users, Vaask is crafted in America of real materials with a form as flawless as its function.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Statistics tell us a huge swath of humanity does not wash their hands as frequently or thoroughly as they should, no matter how often they’re reminded. If people aren’t going to change their habits, what can we do to ensure that germ spread in public buildings is kept to a minimum? Vaask staff conducted extensive historical, scientific and market research in designing the permanent hand sanitizing dispenser. Architects, designers, engineers, healthcare professionals, educational administrators and end users were interviewed throughout the process. Since its launch, Vaask has been installed in offices, restaurants, mixed-use properties, condos and hotels, and its permanence demonstrates facilities' long-term commitment to cleanliness to returning employees and customers.
CHALLENGE: Vaask is manufacturing in Austin, Texas, with parts sourced as close to the Texas capital as possible. This approach ensures stringent quality control and supply chain predictability.
At the core of Vaask’s design is a belief that a product should be adaptable, repairable and waste-free. That’s why Vaask comes with a warranty covering all components. To that end, all parts are accessible and designed to be repairable to extend the system's life far into the future.
Inspired by the Norwegian word for "wash," Vaask (pronounced V-ahh-sk — like a breath of fresh air) embodies today’s desire for a higher class of clean. With an emphasis on sophisticated design and exacting engineering, Vaask redefines manufactured products for today’s modern interiors and creates a lasting first impression.
