DESIGN NAME: Warm Waves
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential
INSPIRATION: The owners are newlyweds who've sought out an elegant, minimalist design concept that brings warmth and complements the majestic, tranquil setting. The idea was to craft a show flat-style home that was both stunning and homely. Luxury and grandeur are front and center in the living and dining room; it's where the homeowners host family and friends. Naturally the private realm takes clean lines and a pared-down simplicity.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The main change in the plan was converting the original Living Room into a Study with a smart glass wall, giving the family an extra working place flooded with sunshine. This contributed to an openness feel without compromising the living room's space.
The creative use of materials to separate the zones in the open-plan Living Room and Kitchen creates a comforting, luxurious environment with warmth and the introduction of elegant, bespoke curved wood cladding panels.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design team incorporated lots of custom-made furniture for this apartment. A swiveling floor lamp from Flos, for example, pays homage to a quintessential street light design. The simplicity and chic elegance of Baxter’s Budapest leather sofa offset the darker palette and grand marble flooring. Other pieces add an aura of sophistication, such as the iconic Tulip recliner armchair in the study from Natuzzi Italia.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2021 and finished in December 2021 in Hong Kong.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design team gutted and reconfigured the property to meet the daily needs of the owners: it got rid of the original one-bedroom layout and created a master suite, a study cum-guest room and a walk-in wardrobe, along with a large living and dining area, and an open kitchen.
At the entry, a steel screen divides the foyer and dining space,
a feature that ushers in fortune and prosperity. Instead of having the bathroom in the middle of the house, an inauspicious layout as far as feng shui is concerned, it’s been moved to the left, allocating more space for the living area.
In feng shui, protruding sharp angles and corners are considered harmful and produce ‘sha chi’ [meaning negative energy in Chinese] at home. Which is why the design included many rounded-edge furniture and comforting curves
CHALLENGE: The fact that curves and voluptuous lines feature prominently didn't happen by chance. Since the owners were concerned about the feng shui setting, there were more than 30 feng shui requirements such as the color scheme, layout setting, the choice of materials, the design team spent a lot of time to fulfilled those requirements.
