PRIMARY FUNCTION: Modular Climbing Wall
INSPIRATION: Rock climbing not only helps promote children's brain development, but also can coordinate the whole body, many parents want to add the corresponding facilities for children at home. However, the traditional home climbing wall disassembly and installation process is complicated and not enough playability, children easily lose interest. Therefore, the team wanted to integrate projection-based interactive games into the climbing process and modularize the traditional wall to solve this problem.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Panda is a rich interactive children's home climbing system, which includes three components: a customized wall frame, interchangeable handholds modules, and interactive projection, allowing children to experience rich and fun interactive climbing games at home without leaving home. Compared with traditional climbing walls, its rock point module is easier to install and adjust on the one hand, and on the other hand, it can maintain children's interest in sports with interactive games.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In order to use panda to experience indoor rock climbing, the user needs to measure the wall size and determine the wall design, and after the wall frame is completed, the installation and commissioning will be carried out by a person. panda provides users with a variety of different types of games, in the process of playing, children can interact with the wall by swinging limbs, touching the projection or rock point, while different types of modules will also provide different feedback through sound, light effects or expansion. light effects or stretching to provide different feedback.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2020 and finished in October 2021 in Hangzhou, and was exhibited in Shanghai UXD Award in December 2021.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The wall frame is made of wood as the main material, the shell of the handholds module is made of ABS plastic through injection molding process, the handholds itself has two different materials of wood and fiberglass for users to choose.In addition, the interactive game in the demo was developed by team members in Unity, but has not been tested in an interactive projector due to lack of equipment.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After determining the project selection, the team visited 4 climbing venues in Hangzhou, interviewed climbing instructors and parents of 3 children to initially understand the actual needs of the target users. Then, the team members conducted a questionnaire survey in a climbing enthusiast platform through random sampling, and 182 valid questionnaires were collected. Based on this, user portraits and user journey maps were drawn, and finally, the demand transformation of pain points was completed.
CHALLENGE: In this project, we spent a lot of energy to explore a method that can quickly adjust the position of the rock point and ensure safety. The team members had previously considered tenon-and-mortise structure, electromagnetic connection and other methods, and carried out prototype production and testing, and finally The connection between the module and the wall frame was chosen by means of a live block.
