DESIGN NAME: Capra
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Via Ferrata Backpack
INSPIRATION: While mountaineering the Alps, you would be amazed to discover that many hikers relinquish their safety on Via Ferrata routes because of the cumbersomeness and time required to extract the equipment from the backpack and wear it. Austrian research discovered that within ten years, over 90% of casualties in Via Ferrata routes were not secured! This piece of information was a guiding light for the Capra project.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Capra combines a backpack with safety equipment for a hiker in Via Ferrata routes.
These routes invite people for a mountaineering experience of hiking and secure climbing integrated into breathtaking paths.
The idea is to merge the harness, helmet, and energy absorbent into the backpack, thus allowing the traveler a quick and comfortable transition from walking mode to secure mode. All this, within less than a minute, without removing the backpack or even bending down.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Today, if you were hiking the Alps and about to reach a VF section, you would have to stop, put the backpack down, get the safety equipment out, gear up, close the bag, and put it back on. All together are approximately 11 stages and up to 5 min. that's why too many people say, 'it's a short section, they will hold tight, and it will be OK..'
Capra project reduces the steps to 5, without removing the backpack or even bending down, all that within less than a single min.
This Project's objective is to make it so easy and fast and win over lazy thoughts of 'I don't have the power to stop, get the gear up, etc..' by that, have the power to save lives.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in July 2018 in Alta via 2, Italy and finished in August 2020 in Tel -Aviv, and was exhibited in Holon in Aug 2020.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research started after a death of an Israeli mountaineer on the Eagles Nest in Austria/Germany, which, combined with my 1640KM experience of alpine trails, sent me after this topic.
1. Interviewing mountaineers from many countries.
2. Studying research - Austrian research that examines the reason for injuries and casualties among VF travelers over a decade was aligned with my experience. Over 90% of deadly accidents were caused by not using safety equipment.
3. Explore what exists today.
4. Ideation of optional ways to approach the problem.
5. After choosing to integrate safety gear into the backpack, explore mechanisms in backpacks in other fields like scuba diving, military, etc.
6. Prototyping and tests, focus groups, fixing problems, prototyping 2nd and again and again.
CHALLENGE: For this design concept to work effectively, it had to be lightweight, easy, and fast to operate for minimalist users.
Finalize a mechanism to support the user when gearing up and down without removing the backpack and without compromising the quality, features, and comfort of an awesome hiking backpack.
