DESIGN NAME: Lorca
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lighting
INSPIRATION: The creation of this design is a reflection of a mix of inspirations that are always close to me and my journey. Everything that is most pure and intimate to me as a person, is translated later into the creations I make. Literature is one of my great passions along with art and architecture. Through poetry I wanted to create a dialogue, between the words, the forms, the textures and the spectator. An interactive and emotional connexion between the deepest intimacy and the purpose of this piece.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The ceiling lamp Lorca is a thin rectangular vertical line coming straight from the ceiling, displaying an excerpt of poetry along this line. The poem is attached along one edge of the square body with a perfect reading and highlight to this main feature. The lamp is entirely made in iron and naturally oxidized, obtaining an irregular and natural finishing with the colored accents of rusty. The light fixture Led hidden at the end of the body creates an accent light. Limited Edition.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Lorca is a ceiling lamp that brings a sculptural note to any space, as well as a human interaction through its poem, it explores the human experience beyond visual. The lamp is easily installed in the ceiling. The standard height adapts to most of the spaces but at the same time for some specific different interiors, the same can be customized in height, by request. The emitted light of this lamp creates an intimate atmosphere as well as may highlight a special object.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in 2014, research and inspiration. This was followed by drawings, sketches and the choice of text for the prototype, an excerpt from a poem by the spanish author Federico Garcia Lorca, an emblematic member of the twentieth century surrealist movement. More prototypes followed to improve dimensions, manufacturing, and lighting. The final piece was completed in 2018 and exhibited at an interiors event, Sleepin. Since 2021 the lamp is on display at Codigo design gallery, Porto.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In the creative process I began with hand sketches, research, and selection of materials. The next step was the approach to the final design and scale of this piece along with the selection of the led lighting features as well as the 3D designs. Once finished all these steps and together with the manufacturers the first prototype starts. The piece is entirely made in iron using welding techniques and laser cut. The finishing is handmade oxidized and stabilized at the end with matt varnish

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I have been feeling more and more in my daily life the need to slow down the pace, to connect more, to feel things. This is the result of the new era and the fast development of technologies that besides helping us also accelerate our natural rhythm, keeping us constantly in a state of alert, leaving only time for fast and superficial connections. As a designer and creative I feel responsible to create pieces that give a balance to the human soul.
CHALLENGE: The challenge for this piece was to create a design that could make us more aware and conscious of our spirit, could bring sensitivity to the materials, combining craftsmanship, technology, art and social culture at the same time. Creating a design that could tie us at the same time to our history, to our consciousness and creativity, in order to improve life and create a dialogue, through my personal vision and experiences, was undoubtedly the biggest challenge.
