PRIMARY FUNCTION: Robot-Assisted Surgery
INSPIRATION: Among all surgical robots, four-arm laparoscopic surgical robots are considered the most technically advanced, equipped with the most complex system and cutting-edge technology.As there is currently only one widely commercialized laparoscopic surgical robot available for use worldwide, the launch of MicroPort® Toumai® will reduce the cost of robotic surgeries and will alleviate the economic burden for patients, accelerating the development and promotion of robotic surgery.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Toumai has many technical merits such as realistic 3D surgical field, fine manipulation of micro-instruments, and high dexterity in narrow space.This is integral to surgical operations in complex laparoscopies, including separation and hemostasis, suturing and knotting, and functional reconstruction. At the same time, it avoids large surgical trauma, bleeding, and high complication rate associated with traditional open surgery, and enables surgical operations that are truly precise, safe.It also could be applied to single-site surgery.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The surgeon performs the surgery by operating the surgical console, and the robot side synchronizes the surgeon's surgical movements. The robot filters out the surgeon's hand tremors to improve the safety of the surgery, the console provides a realistic 3D view of the surgery to magnify the surgical details, and the robot's instruments provide a range of motion beyond the limits of human hands to achieve difficult surgeries.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Research and development for the surgical robot within MicroPort began in 2014 in Shanghai,was approved for marketing by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) in January 2022 in Shanghai.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: During the registered clinical trials, Toumai was used in a series of challenging surgeries with the purpose of broadening its clinical applications. In various procedures in general surgery, thoracic surgery, and gynecology, it was the first time that a surgical robot developed in China was clinically applied. In addition, Toumai® became the first and only domestic laparoscopic robot to complete clinical trials in the field of thoracic and pelvic surgery (urology and gynecology). In addition to recognition by experts from different clinical centers, the robot has also demonstrated the R&D strength of Chinese companies in the field of intelligent surgical robots.
CHALLENGE: The surgical robot is a very complex robotic system that involves the integration of several technologies such as mechanical electronics, artificial intelligence, and software algorithms. It also needs to be combined with the clinical needs of surgery and undergo a very long cycle of surgical validation to ensure that the product design is safe and effective.
