DESIGN NAME: Beautifect
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Portable Makeup Case
INSPIRATION: From a young age, Tara Lalvani wanted to help people, after graduating as a dentist in 2002 she started her career in making people smile. Applying makeup always felt like an inconvenience, she realised she was wasting valuable time taking out her makeup and having to tidy it all away again in poor lighting. After searching for a solution and not finding one, she started her mission to make women's lives easier - resulting in Beautifect.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A makeup case that hasn't been done before. Consisting of a distortion-free large glass mirror with 5x magnification, quality high-CRI lights simulating 5 different lighting environments, innovative storage allows makeup to be illuminated and organised with maximum efficiency, torque hinge system engineered to hold mirror in any position ensuring the optimal angle for use in all settings.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: A chargeable make-up case, where your makeup can be stored along with your brushes (in a separate compartment) to avoid any mess. With the different light settings, you can apply your make-up in any environment to get the real finish.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Januay 2017 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, and finished in January 2020

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The product has an injection molded ABS shell and interior as well as an extruded and formed annodized aluminium rim with metal hinges and clasps. It also contains a scratch resistant chemically etched distortion free glass mirror and fabric wings made from a PU leatherette. The product was manufactured in China but designed in the UK.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 293 x 246 x 98
TAGS: Makeup, case, mirror, storage
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design started with the observation that there were makeup mirrors, makeup cases and makeup lights but none that combined these in a way that would not compromise each of these functions. Design concepts were produced to create the largest possible mirror size for a portable case. Multiple solutions were created to provide a design that would protect the mirror from marks and scratches as well as maximize storage. This resulted in the makeup wings and the development of the torque hinges.
CHALLENGE: The challenges include the following: combining the custom torque hinges within the main body to ensure the device can be used at different angles, devising a way of protecting the mirror without impacting storage, and creating an optimum storage arrangement through user research, testing and shape data analysis. Additional work was done to develop a custom variable colour temperature diffused light that operates with high lumens over a small throw distance.
