DESIGN NAME: Jules Vernes Balloons
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Playground
INSPIRATION: Just as Jules Vernes book took readers on imaginative journeys around the world, so too, playgrounds aspire to take children on imaginative journeys. Hot air balloons are the perfect combination of color, shape and imagination, and so they are ideal candidates for play systems that stimulate children's imagination.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This integrated play system is designed to create a different and empowering new experience as a multi-sensory egalitarian experience of sound, color, challenge, and imagination. The project arose from the desire to improve and make playground equipment genuinely accessible so that disabled children, especially those in wheelchairs, could participate with their friends and peers.
Jules Vernes Balloons includes an upgrade of the regular playground tower; in terms of the accessibility it offers to the disabled in wheelchairs, and in terms of the multi-sensory experience that the child experiences, including color, shape, sound and imagination.
It creates a shared experience for disabled populations, regardless of children's abilities.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The base of the play system includes wheelchair-accessible bridges. With them, a wheelchair-bound person can access a higher floor, engage with more playground elements, and play an active with others. But even beyond that, the play system offers a variety of experiential activities for every user of every age and ability. There are challenging rope nets and high slides for older children, and sensory game panels and low, slides for younger children. Everyone will experience colorful fun, harmonic sounds from musical panels, and balloons that stimulate the imagination.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The play system is designed and manufactured for a park in Beit Shemesh, Israel. The installation will be in March-April this year. In the attached link, you can see pictures of a playground that we designed, manufactured, and installed in 2020 in Rosh HaAyin, Israel.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: First, we conducted extensive research, including an in-depth study of accessibility standards. From there began a process of adapting the company’s standard tower to the needs of the general public. For the musical instruments, we hired an engineer who specializes in outdoor musical instruments to ensure that they would be peerless, with crisp, accurate sounds and simple to use by everyone. The primary material from which the play system is constructed is oven-painted steel, which is extremely durable. To this, we added colored polycarbonate panels, to create colored light reflections.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: They may be confined to a wheelchair but their imagination is free.
From 2018 I tried to turn the hot air balloon into a play system.
I decided that it should be a structure with an endless variety of assembly options, suitable for a variety of public park areas.
The combination of design and accessibility requires the customer who wants the design to make the park accessible.
CHALLENGE: I believe imagination is the best game.
The challenge was to integrate the widest possible range of people while still complying with safety and accessibility laws and a new user experience without harming the imagination experience.
