DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Desert Desire

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Earrings

INSPIRATION:
These were the first pieces I would make and design in metal and it was from this situation that the idea was born. If I faced new challenges, the 1st design had to symbolize them. The snakes as a symbol of change, adaptation and skill, elegance, and mysticism. The cactus came from the association of the theme and concepts, adaptation to extreme situations, inner strength, and persistence. Two elements of nature as a statement.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
There are some characteristics that distinguish these pieces and highlight the influence of graphic design. The principles of logo design are incorporated into the jewelry, and the visual effect of three-dimensionality is achieved, only, through textures and thread patterns. The second is the imperfection of each handmade piece. These geometric shapes assume accuracy but do not have it. Each curve and texture are different. They are imperfectly unique, as in nature, and explore the peculiarity of two worlds – cacti and snakes –making them harmoniously coexist in a system.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Two different elements - snake and cactus - are two earring designs that, when combined, create a new possibility that is just as authentic and valid.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Litter Havana, Miami, September 2021 First ideas and drawings emerged, finalizing the production of the pieces and packaging in November 2021, to be presented in the Dec/Feb 2022 season at Flying Solo, NYC.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The prototype of each piece was made in cardboard, testing sizes and proportions until reaching the final dimensions. The pieces are made in Silver Clay with a purity of 999. Each piece is cut by an oversized template, as the metal clay in its final process reduces the size by approximately 10-15%. Once the shapes are cut and the textures are drawn, the metal clay is dried and torch firing. The pieces are polished manually and individually to finally add the details in the red thread.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Nature is imperfect and beautiful, unique in each of its elements, and it was this principle that inspired the silver handwork. Each piece is imperfectly unique. And just as in nature, finding the peculiarity of both worlds and making them harmoniously coexist, was the idea for the designs. Imperfect as our nature and unique as our being.

CHALLENGE:
I was facing for the first time work with silver, which implied, besides the manual work on the new material, designing specifically for it and its requirements. The biggest challenge in the design was to bring these natural elements to the two-dimensional and maintain their volume, textures, and shapes at a visual level, and make both designs work well separately and together. The other challenge was the packaging design, which I designed specifically for these pieces, this had to be visually a preview of the pieces it contained, so it had to have the same bi-dimensional principles, the mix of textures, the volumetry, and the manual work, each envelope is folded and sewn by hand.

NAME:
Joy Color Design

PROFILE:
Yamile Salomon (Joy) is a Cuban graphic designer. In late 2018 in Havana, she launched Joy Color Design, a project dedicated to the design of jewelry and various products that are strongly influenced by graphic design. Now, from her Little Havana apartment in Miami, she creates designs with a visual and conceptual synthesis. As a sort of wearable graphics, her pieces represent where textile meets silversmithing, using embroidery to unify materials and surfaces. Her designs are an elegant yet playful mix of materials, shapes, and stories that carry a distinctively Cuban vision of minimalism that seek to be the joy and detail of your day. She currently works with 999 fine silver and recycled acrylic as her main materials. Each piece – Imperfect but unique – is manufactured by the designer herself.
