DESIGN NAME: Arboreal Fall
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Art Print
INSPIRATION: I have always been inspired by landscape, particularly by the relationship between landscape and time. Impermanence within the natural world, and human activity in transforming it, is endlessly fascinating. My working methods are inspired by those artists who regard digital technology not as a means in itself, but as another tool and material within art practice. There is room for both paint and pixel.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Much of the artist's representative practice is an exploration of timelessness through study of the natural landscape. Trees have a lifecycle, an observable journey through time, and yet have a cultural sense of timelessness. It is this aspect that became the focus of this project, through use of mark marking. While photography provides a means to capture realism, and the digital provides new methodology, both are mediums subject to their invention in time, without timelessness. This project was an exploration of whether it is possible to unshackle a representation from its defining technologies.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It has always been my intent to use both traditional and digital media in such a way that both become integral my work. We are increasingly surrounded, even saturated, by digital media to an extent that many expect art to be merely the task of an algorithm or ‘filter’. In beginning my work in pencil and paint, and using digital as a tool, I hope to show how art is still very much a human activity. I believe it is, and what should, define us.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: James’ working method has been developing since 2012. His work has been exhibited at gallery level since 2015. This project was completed in early 2021 and formed the main entry portfolio pieces for his current MA Illustration.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research involved studying work by artists whose practice marked the shift from using analogue to digital technologies while keeping traditional methods central to the creative process. Inspired by such artists, my practice explored how traditional artistic skills can be extended by digital technology. I realised that the human input of primitive mark making could coexist with the increasing likelihood that anybody interacting with my work would do so via a digital platform. I intend my work to portray the realism of the natural to a digital audience.
CHALLENGE: My commitment to natural realism while using digital methods has led to a common reaction from my audience that the work is a digital manipulation of an existing image. When digital imagery has nearly reached ubiquity, there is an underlying expectation that any image can be given an artistic sheen via a ‘filter’. Putting the work online, I can demonstrate my working method. Showing my audience that traditional working methods have been used, and still matter, is the most challenging aspect of my practice. Our interaction with the natural world matters, and we are in danger of forgetting it.
