DESIGN NAME:
Food Guardian

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Mobile Application

INSPIRATION:
More than a trillion dollars worth of food is wasted every year. Among them, the consumption side of food waste accounted for the largest proportion, the reason lies in the lack of consumers' awareness of saving food and lack of effective reminder and supervision. Therefore, it is urgent to adopt design methods to reduce the food waste of consumers.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Food guardian is designed to record food waste in real time and encourages people to save food through gamification. Through food guardian, people can control the amount of food they purchase and store leftovers in the shared fridge through App's reminders. Food guardian also provides ways of recycling of surplus food with the cooperation of food supplier and relevant organizations.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
First, enter the home page and click on each 2.5D building model to enter each module, including portion record, food calendar, shopping list, leftovers contest, food storage, food donation and food wizard. The food intake recording module is usually used when the user goes to the restaurant to eat. It is connected with the terminal device (some kind of calculable weight plate) to record the weight of the food in the plate and remind the user when the maximum amount of food is exceeded. Under the food calendar module, users can intuitively understand the situation of wasted food in the past every day by sliding left and right and switching time, and click the bread in the meal plate to know the details. The shopping list module is usually used when the user goes to the supermarket to shop. By connecting with a terminal device (a shopping cart that calculates the type and weight of food), the user records the purchase of food and reminds the user of which food is not finished. Through the leftovers contest module, users can challenge people nearby individually or as a team. The one who wastes less food in a day wins and gets corresponding rewards. In addition, users can view their ranking among their friends. In the food storage module, users can use the shared refrigerator to store the food they have not finished by scanning the QR code. At the same time, users can view all the nearby food storage stations, check the history and ongoing orders, and donate food to the food storage station. Recent online donation activities are displayed in the food donation module. Users can check the details of a project and donate gold coins. After successful donation, they can increase the value of love. When the user has a good performance in the process of saving food, they can get the corresponding reward of gold coins, users can use these gold coins to raise food elves, but also can interact with friends' food elves.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
First I draw low-fidelity prototype of the interface on paper. Then I use Figma、Photoshop and Cinema4D to create a high-fidelity prototype of the interface and make interactive prototypes through Figma. The visual image of APP home page is modeled by C4D and made by using 3d rendering and 2D technology. For some vector illustrations in APP interfaces, I first draw sketches on paper and then use the pen tool in Photoshop to draw them, some illustrations are drawn directly in software using digital boards. Next, import all materials into Figma to complete the high-fidelity prototype drawing, and finally use Figma's prototyping function to complete the production of the entire interactive model.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
First, the desktop research method was adopted to understand the current situation of food waste, its occurrence and different attitudes to food waste by searching for materials and reading literature. Second, the one-to-one interview method was used to conduct in-depth interviews with two target users, and the collected interview content was coded and extracted, so as to understand the frequency of food waste of users, the causes of food waste and the ways they thought might reduce food waste. In the stage of user demand analysis, the extracted interview content is classified and sorted out to form an affinity graph, and user demand statements and possible constraints are sorted out. In general, literature search and user analysis of the conclusions can make design direction clear.

CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenge is solving technical problems at the device's end. The core function of food-Guardian is to detect the weight of Food on the plate and send a warning message when it exceeds the maximum amount of Food a user can eat. When the user is shopping in the supermarket, the quantity and type of different food in the shopping car can be detected and recorded in real time. Therefore, the successful operation of "Food-Guardian" largely depends on the accuracy and accuracy of detection, which is not a small challenge for the relevant technical personnel. In addition, it is also urgent to realize the information transmission and link between the mobile terminal and the terminal hardware.
