DESIGN NAME: On Bin
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Dining Chair
INSPIRATION: In the Japanese language, onbin means to be gentle, quiet, and amicable. It also means to be conflict-averse. The design attempts to create a physical representation of the essence of this word.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: On bin is a dining chair that elevates the experience of sharing a meal. The goal was to create a hand-crafted chair that evokes the feeling of calmness through flowing, controlled curves. The sitting experience is designed around how a patron would interact with the chair in the intimate atmosphere of a fine dining restaurant.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: 1. Upon arrival to the restaurant, the guests will be escorted to their tables by a waiter. They will first encounter On Bin from afar.
2. As they approach their tables, the guests will notice the backrest and general outline of the chair.
3. Once the chairs are pulled out and the guests prepare to sit, they can feel the details and materiality.
4. Within the first few minutes of sitting, the chairs quietly fade into the background as the dining experience takes over.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2021 and ended in December 2021.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of the project was figuring out the joinery. The parts needed to fit perfectly and the CNC milling was pretty rough. In order for the joints to fit, they needed to be trimmed with a Dremel and hand-sanded.
