DESIGN NAME: Paper Plane
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence
INSPIRATION: Inspired by kids folding paper craft and the image of a soaring paper plane, the designers create a home of hope symbolizing a greater future. Semi-industrial style's elegance combines with multi-functional spatial design, epitomizing the possibility of "small space, big style." A gentle color palette goes well with some warm and vibrant color blocks as decoration. Various types of wooden and stone materials form an organic atmosphere in the space.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: While the higher space, such as the ceiling at the entrance, is commonly not well-utilized, the designers turn it into a vertical extra-storage room for keeping the small house tidy and neat. According to the owners, the public area of 16 meter square has to include a dining table, living room, the study and an exercise space. Thus, not only have the designers arranged each space evenly and effectively, they also apply folding hidden tables to make the dining and exercise area the same place.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The designers take the concept of kids practicing paper craft, applying the image of soaring up high to the ceiling. This arrangement outlines the shape and vibe of the public area. The irregular tilting veneer creates a sense of fluidity. With a higher recessed ceiling corresponding to the aisle, the overall design at this area would not cause a sense of depressed height, yet giving refreshment to the residents.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project is finished in June 2021 in New Taipei City.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: By overlapping the two functional spaces and dividing the usage based on time and situation, the space utilization can be improved. The overall design thus defines how the space is used, based on time and situation parallelly from the entrance to the end.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The project is 43 square meter.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A great amount of eco-friendly plywood, graded by national standard of formaldehyde emission as CNS-F1, are used in the space. By processing it at the factory, it reduces waste and dust on site. If needed, one can disassemble and install it somewhere else, minimizing possible waste in the future.
CHALLENGE: Since the space is smaller than usual, the designers use two techniques to extend and amplify the spatial perception: vertical development and flexible public space utilization. By reducing use of traditional partitions, the application of materials, furniture positions, multi-functional design and aisle arrangement intuitively divide the space into different areas.
