DESIGN NAME: Under the Bodhi Tree
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Apartment
INSPIRATION: Paying homage to the Buddha perfect enlightenment, calmness, simplicity, and openness have been the guiding lights for this project. It explores the interdependence between the spiritual and material, inside and outside, nature and what we call home. The earthy colour palette not only brings a timeless character to the space, but also blurs the lines between the home and natural environment. Most importantly, these colours and materials reveal the elegance that lies in simplicity.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Three elements brass, wood and black flow throughout the entire apartment. Unnecessary partition walls were replaced with furniture and screens, so as to enlarge the living room space, while also differentiating between its various functions. In a departure from tradition, the Buddha hall is both minimalist and monolithic. The aura like glow of the Buddha provides a sense of warmth, gently drawing people into the space. Surrounded by natural elements, from both within and outside, the occupant might feel as though they are bearing witness to the buddha achieving enlightenment under the Bodhi tree all those years ago.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The predominantly wooden interior creates an atmosphere filled with wonder, enchantment and warmth. Consistent use of material creates dimension and depth, with natural wooden texture direction and tone gradient. This continual flow creates frame openings, drawing the occupant attention to the detail found in the interior and its landscape, without being overly-imposing. The large generous open volume is designed to bring out the occupants gregarious nature during the day, while also preparing them for rest in the evening.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in September 2020 and completed in December 2020 in Taichung, Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Wood element is also a key feature in this project. Walls, ceilings and floors are adorned with three dimensional wooden structures, creating a sense of consistency as well as depth. The untamed lines that run through every panel of wood can be compared to a fingerprint each one unique from the next, as if handcrafted by Mother Nature herself.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This project covers an internal space totaling 114 square meters, excluding balconies. The layout comprises an entry corridor, living room, dining room, 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 1 guest toilet and a sky outdoor garden.
