DESIGN NAME:
Obori Soma Ware Matsunaga Kiln

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Shop and Atelier

INSPIRATION:
In this project, a top light is installed at the top of the house. The top light brings plenty of light to the interior space. In the store, it expresses precise and vivid colors, and in the workshop, where delicate work is required, gentle and uniform light pours in through the shoji screens on the ceiling with high illumination. The top light above the checkout counter functions as a light that changes the impression of the back of the counter.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Matsunaga Kiln was located in Fukushima, Japan, producing the designated traditional crafts with more than 300 years of history. One proprietary feature of Obori Soma Ware is its double-layered structure, which enables this daily-use ceramics to hold boiling water and prevents it from cooling down. We wanted to incorporate and express this feature in our architecture. We believe that the different scales of architecture and ceramics, in the same composition, influence each other.

NAME:
Obori Soma Ware manufacturer Matsunaga Kiln

PROFILE:
Matsunaga Kiln was located in Namie Town, Fukushima, Japan, producing the designated traditional crafts with more than 300 years of history. â– ABOUT US We hope that people who live in Japan and the rest of the world to come to love Fukushima throughout Obori Soma Ware. The roots of Japanese ceramics are in China. Until 1950th , people would eat and drink from the one vessel, a companion at their meals. While, on the one hand, ceramics came to be known as works of art and were loved by the wealthy and powerful of the times, these days, the production of cheap objects has become easy due to the advance of globalization. Traditional crafts and even the ceramics industry find themselves in a difficult position. However, the progress of globalization also presents Japanese crafts with the opportunity to be re-examined afresh. Obori Soma Ware is a traditional craft of Fukushima that is the pride and the treasure of the whole nation and of the rest of the world. While preserving the traditions that we now have, we intend to evolve without fear of change. It is our long-cherished desire for people to come to love Fukushima even more through Obori Soma Ware.

I'm absolutely in awe of this award-winning design. The way the top light brings plenty of light to the interior space creates a striking contrast and helps to express precise and vivid colors. The gentle and uniform light pouring in through the shoji screens on the ceiling is a great way to bring high illumination to the delicate work that is done in the workshop. Even the light at the checkout counter changes the impression of the back of the counter. It's clear that a tremendous amount of thought and care went into this design, and I'm so impressed by the results.
