| DESIGN NAME: Mudita Moment PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wristwatch INSPIRATION: We wanted to create an everyday product to effectively help in reducing stress & improving overall health & well-being. Breath is a fundamental part of our life & research proves it has a huge impact on both physical and mental health. We combined the power of conscious breath with a product that is virtually always with us-a wristwatch. Minimalism, neutrality, unisex approach, high-quality components, as well as cruelty-free materials are the values which embody the creation of Mudita Moment. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Mudita Moment is an everyday accessory which encourages us to improve our overall well-being by practicing breathing exercises. The calming tempo of the seconds hand & the 15-dot pattern on the dial are marked at 4-second intervals, making it easy to adjust our breathing and perform mindful breathing exercises, such as box breathing. Mudita Moment is a tool & reminder to regularly practice breathwork at any time, anywhere, therefore helping to reduce everyday stress & improve well-being. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Mudita Moment is an automatic watch, without extra features or unnecessary elements. It harnesses the calming tempo of the seconds hand & uses the brilliantly simple 15-dot design to guide the wearer during breathing exercises. It also serves as a reminder to practice breathwork. It’s entirely analog & doesn’t require any specialized tools. Just look at the dial & adjust breathing to the movement of the seconds hand. A manual with three basic breathing exercises is included in the packaging. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Breathing exercises are strongly connected to time. Each exercise is based on various patterns & intervals, which involve breath & the length of the interval. A great number of exercises are performed using 4-second intervals. Extensive design sessions & cooperation with experts, led us to create the perfect tempo of the seconds hand. Together with the 15 dots on the dial, this combination is an amazingly simple, yet brilliant solution to turn a watch into a tool to practice breathing exercises. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Case size: 38 mm; Case thickness: 10,8mm; Mechanism: Japanese, automatic movement Miyota 9015 (kinetic, battery-free); Front and back glass: Sapphire Crystal; Case material: Sandblasted 316L Stainless Steel; Power reserve: up to 42 hours; Strap width: 20mm; Strap fixing: quick spring bar movement (one-click pin release, easy to change); Available strap materials: Cork; Bananatex® and Desserto® (all plant-based, vegan, cruelty-free) TAGS: watch, minimalist, automatic watch, minimalist watch, breathing exercises, mindful breathing, unisex watch, vegan watch, plant-based materials, analogue breathing feature RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Stress has been classified as the health epidemic of the XXI century. Although it’s natural for our body to react to acute & sporadic stress, the reality of contemporary life is that our body is now inundated with a lower, but continuous level of stress, which is often unnoticeable. Researchers confirm reducing unnecessary everyday stress benefits our health & overall well-being. More and more studies confirm that breathing exercises are one of the most effective ways to reduce stress. CHALLENGE: Main objectives of our project are minimalism & simplicity. It was extremely hard to add another function to an analogue wristwatch without actually adding extra elements. After narrowing options down, we decided to use the calming tempo of the seconds hand & redesign the dial. Just by adding the 15-dots pattern on the dial, we created a completely new functionality to an analogue watch. Creating an alternative, vegan, plant-based watch straps was also a challenge.
