DESIGN NAME: Neckphones TRi
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Hybrid Headphones
INSPIRATION: As early adopters of urban e-bikes for daily commuting, we realize it is very risky and not allowed to ride and listen to music or make calls with headphones while riding around the city. The Neckphones TRi give you the freedom to ride safely and legally without disturbing the people around thanks to its proprietary patented directional open sound technology.
The design inspiration was to create hybrid audio devices with the audio quality and comfort of a headphone and the versatility of an open sound neckspeaker.
After many electroacoustics prototypes made with experts from Harman Kardon and B&O, we realize we need a new solution with a directional open sound.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The hybrid headphones can easily turn from headphones into neckspeakers or portable speakers, offering a patent-pending electroacoustics engineering to provide directional open sound that allows micromobility users to safely and legally enjoy music, calls, podcasts and audiobooks with non-invasive sound tech while being aware and not disturbing their surroundings. It is the only legal and safe device to use while commuting around the city that has dual functionality.
Its also the first hybrid headphone in the world to have Active Noise Cancelling, and interchangeable earpads of different sizes.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Neckphones TRi can easily change from regular headphones into uniquely engineered immersive sound loudspeakers for life on the go, enjoying calls or music while safely and legally commuting by bike or e-scooter.
It has the advantage of not having to carry two audio devices because everything is built in one device. Thanks to its own uniquely designed micro-speaker it offers directional non-invasive sound with a better performance.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2019 in Barcelona (Spain) and will be finished in 2021 in Copenhagen (Denmark), and was exhibited in top industry exhibitions like IFA in Berlin in 2019 and Global Sources in Hong Kong in 2020.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main challenge we faced was the design and engineering of the earcups thickness in order to build a high-quality sound and premium design personal audio device that will look like a headphone and still deliver a surprising powerful audio performance when being used on neckspeakers thanks to four custom designed and build speakers.
We have created an exclusive internal back cavity for the sound. Its two outer micro speakers activate only when being used on neckspeaker mode, delivering exclusively high and mid-range frequencies.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our design team did extensive market research of headphones, portable speakers and wearables in the EU, USA & Asia. We found out that there are only 3% of personalizable headphones on the market. The final solution is to provide a two in one device that offers extra comfort in any situation especially thanks to its patent-pending ergonomic ultra extensible headband design to fit into the 99% of the world population with two sizes of ear pads from an ecosystem of interchangeable accessories.
CHALLENGE: The automatic built-in switcher to change the sound from headphone to neckspeaker, placed in the headband was the biggest challenge since it has not been done anything similar before. It was a must, to have this component very reduced and light in order to be aesthetic, and provide the premium and cool design while still being 100% safe, functional and easy to use for our customers/users.
