DESIGN NAME: The Interplay of Light and Shadows
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interior Design
INSPIRATION: The wisdom of I-Ching inspires the design. The homeowner embraces its teachings, and the design incorporates that. I-Ching is explained through hexagrams, a symbolic graphic containing a stack of 6 lines. The lines are either yin or yang, and each hexagram describes situations, called gua. The central theme is that the balanced opposites of yin and yang are the fundamental basis for everything in the world. The designer ingeniously captures and instills that concept by embedding hexagrams and pairing contrasting elements to communicate special meanings throughout the residence.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This design cleverly incorporates the ancient philosophy of I-Ching into the beautiful, modern design. A minimalist black-and-white color scheme represents the harmony of yin and yang. Linear transitions symbolize the natural law of constant change and create layers of visual beauty. Hexagrams from I-Ching representing Heaven, Earth, Family, and Advancement are subtly integrated into the grand bookcase and wall. Light and shadows interact and complement each other, just like yin and yang. The design achieves the owner’s wishes for his home to reflect his philosophy of life.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The homeowner follows I-Ching to seek balance and harmony in everyday life. He desired those elements to be channeled through the design. Thus, a hexagram is created in the balcony wall through etched lines, and hexagrams are established in the bookcase through wide shelves or divided shelves. Black and white highlight yin and yang. Light and shadows augment the effect and add depth. Contrasting linear flow, elevation, and materials connote the harmony of opposites. It captivates attention with style and promotes the homeowner’s desire for self-reflection and spiritual growth.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The location of this interior design project is Hsinchu City, Taiwan. The project started in January 2019, and it was completed in June 2019.

I-Ching consists of 64 hexagrams. In this context, a hexagram is a representative graphic composed of six horizontal lines stacked atop one another. Each line is either yin (a line with a gap in the middle) or yang (a solid line), and the Chinese word for the hexagram is gua. Each different combination contains a description or explanation of natural elements and life situations that may arise.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The timeless wisdom of ancient Chinese philosophy is ingeniously infused into magnificent, modern design. The homeowner studies and applies I-Ching guidance in everyday living and wished to transform that into the residential design. The designer materialized that concept through a variety of features. The most significant are the embedded hexagrams in the wall and bookcase. Additionally, yin and yang elements are evident throughout, as in black and white, highs and lows, squares and circles, and hard and soft. Not only conveying meaning, they impart unique beauty and style.
CHALLENGE: The greatest challenge was coming up with how to meet the client’s wishes and meticulously integrate I-Ching into the residential design. It should be comprehensively integrated and significantly meaningful, it should dazzle with its striking appearance and use of materials, and it should be practical. Amazingly, the designer successfully accomplished all requirements. The home is resplendent with I-Ching. It possesses a sleek, minimalist, modern design. It is multi-functional. Desks in the study can slide and move in parallel to free up space for exercise or other activities.
