DESIGN NAME: Moja
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for the Moja Coffee Table is an expansion of creator and owner, Albert Potgieters, Optique Bench. The design developed after Albert wanted to combine the wild and organic lines of the Optique Bench with a more solid table top. Attempting to bridge the gap between Furniture and Art to create a special combination of both. This led to the creation of these two outer, wild, looking pieces merging in the middle.
Moja means Unity in Swahili
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The creation of the Moja Coffee Table uses the unique technique or process of steam bending to create the special bend in the wood.
This makes it possible for this piece to get these special curves that will not be possible otherwise and also gives the Moja Coffee table its special look and brings an unique element to these furniture pieces. Smaller pieces of wood is used to build up the Moja Coffee Table into a functional art piece. Using these techniques or way of designing creates unique lines and natural curves.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Moja Coffee Table is considered functional art, meaning it can be used for its function, but it is also an art piece by itself. The versatile nature and aesthetics lends itself to be used as a stand alone feature, as well as a functional piece incorporated to compliment the surrounding interior. The shape of the Moja Coffee Table itself with its special curves, along with the symmetrical lines is aesthethically pleasing and visually attractive.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The designing process started in June 2019 and was finalized in August 2019 in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: A non-conventional method is used to create and design the Moja Coffee Table. This design is built out of smaller pieces of wood and uses the technique of steam bending to create the curves in the wood. One by one these pieces are taken out of the steam box and quickly put into the form it needs to take. Then when the pieces are dry, they are taken out of the clamps and glued together to create the shape of the top. The next step is to glue the legs piece by piece.
The only materials used in this design is the solid wood and glue to keep the pieces together.
Initially, pieces of off-cut wood were used and going on a rough design the building process started. The rest was playing around with pieces, positions and possibilities. The fluid process between designing and construction lead to this aesthetically pleasing art like coffee table.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research, as with the other designs, are not done on a specific date and time. It is a constant, on going process. A life style if you will. Albert is always observing his surroundings, a skill and habit carried on from his years of being a Physiotherapist. Albert loves observing the shapes, forms and movements in nature and also taking inspiration from architectural shapes and lines of historic buildings. This accumulates over time when designing a product. After this it is hours of shaping the concept or idea through playing with the individual pieces and building it up into the design pieces seen.
CHALLENGE: bending
glue/ quick working
beauty and the challenge is the unique characterisics of each peice of wood. Since they are off cuts they are not perfect/ identical, but Albert Potgieter Designs believes in creating sustainable friendly pieces, that represents the imperfect yet intriguingly beautiful characterics of nature.
