DESIGN NAME: Arc
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Carry on Luggage
INSPIRATION: While I was researching airports and flights and looking for areas for design improvement, I found one of the significant reasons for flight delays is caused by baggage traffics. There is too much luggage, a flawed baggage organizing system, and insufficient space in the airplane overhead bin. It made me question if we are utilizing the overhead bin efficiently because there was always space for a shopping bag and jacket.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Due to increasing travelers, airlines require rigorous restrictions on carry on size to prevent baggage traffics and shortages of overhead bin space. Deep inside the overhead bin lies a substantial unoccupied space where people squeeze in their shopping bags and jackets. As the cylindrical fuselage of an airplane is always round, it can cause lots of dead space. Arc's curved corner replicates the inner curve of the overhead bin. Arc is a concept that airlines can adopt to utilize the overhead bin space more efficiently and potentially more luggage space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Arc has a flipped orientation to ease in crowded airports and narrow pathways in the airplane. It ensures a smooth ride and supports maneuverability with 360 spinner wheels and a rotatable telescopic handle. There are three pull handles on top, front, and bottom, and the bottom handle is to support lifting in and out of the overhead bin. All three handles are tucked in and flushed to prevent any obstructions. Other features are a quickly accessible laptop pocket on the side, water resistant fabric and zipper, combination lock, tag, backside bars to support sliding in and out of the overhead bin, and embroidered name tag on the bottom handle to identify the bag owner from the overhead bin.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This idea that I had a couple of years ago was designed in May-July 2021 in Irvine, California.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Arc is a hard shell, will be vacuum formed with a polycarbonate. Abrasion and water resistant nylon will be used for the pockets and pull handles. The telescopic handle and zipper pullers are metal, and the plastic logo on the pocket will be ultrasonically welded onto the fabric.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The standard size for carry on luggage in the U.S. is 558.8 mm x 355.6 mm x 228.6 mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: First, I did online research to gather basic knowledge on the issues people experience in the airport. Then I went to the airports and airplanes to observe how people use the products. And through market research and gathering competitor products, I analyzed the features and details that worked and did not work.
CHALLENGE: Every airline may have different sizes of overhead bins and carry on size rules. Some airplanes may also have different types of overhead bins: shelf or pivot; which pivot type bins don't have arc inside. It would be challenging to design a one-fits-all carry on, therefore collaborating with airlines and airplane manufacturing companies can lead to better execution.
